Sancho el Sabio Foundation

Sancho el Sabio Vital Fundazioa is a foundation that preserves and provides access to Basque bibliographic and documentary heritage. Its main catalogue serves as a single search point for bibliographic, archival, digitised and external reference holdings, and it also maintains a specific catalogue for hierarchical consultation of historical archival funds. Its Euskal Memoria Digitala (EMD) is an open-access repository of digital holdings on Basque themes and Basque authors, produced, acquired or conserved at its Vitoria-Gasteiz headquarters. The foundation also organises activities such as open workshops and a university research competition.

Sancho el Sabio Vital Fundazioa has operated as a library and archive of Basque culture and memory since 1964. It preserves Basque bibliographic and documentary heritage and provides access through its main catalogue, a specific catalogue for historical archival funds, and the Euskal Memoria Digitala (EMD) open-access digital repository, whose holdings are produced, acquired or conserved at its Vitoria-Gasteiz headquarters. The foundation organises activities including open workshops and a university research competition; in one edition of the Certamen Universitario de Investigación, the jury awarded its prize to Maddi Izaguirre Ayestaran for an article on religious-medical, hygienic and cultural practices around water in the western circum-Pyrenean territory in Roman times, with a monetary award of 1,000 euros and publication of the work in the entity's journal.
