Overview
San Giorgio del Porto S.p.A. (SGdP), officially known as Officine Meccaniche Navali e Fonderie San Giorgio del Porto, is an Italian shipyard headquartered in Genoa. Founded in 1928 by Ferdinando Garrè as a ship maintenance workshop, the company has operated in the ship repair industry for over 90 years. Today it is part of the Genova Industrie Navali S.p.A. (GIN) group and employs around 140–160 people, including naval architects, mechanical engineers, skilled workers and emergency response teams. SGdP's core business is ship repair and maintenance, serving vessels ranging from mid-range ships to the largest cruise ships, Ro-Pax vessels, offshore units, LNG carriers and cargo ships. The yard also offers specialised services such as electrical works, overhaul and repair of electric motors, propulsion system work (including tail shaft and rudder removal, thruster and azipod overhauls), fully customised refitting and conversion, and painting and washing technologies. It operates 24/7/365 and can assist vessels anywhere in the world. Together with its French sister company Chantier Naval de Marseille (CNdM), SGdP operates a total of eight dry docks and over 2 km of equipped repair quays. Among these is dry dock no. 10 (465 m × 85 m), the largest in the Mediterranean. The shipyard is located close to Genoa's city centre and airport, offering convenient access for clients. In April 2016, SGdP and Fratelli Neri established Piombino Industrie Marittime, expanding its presence in the Italian ship repair sector. SGdP is a global point of reference for repair and conversion of all types of ship, Ro-Pax vessel upgrades and mid-range vessel construction projects. Its client portfolio includes prestigious shipowners from around the world, and it works in accordance with all rules set by the relevant Classification Societies, most of which have offices in Genoa.
History
San Giorgio del Porto was founded in Genoa in 1928 by Ferdinando Garrè as a ship maintenance workshop. The company's early years were marked by the destruction of its workshops during World War II due to bombing, but it was rebuilt and continued to operate in the ship repair industry. Over the decades, SGdP established itself as a historic shipyard with state-of-the-art facilities, serving prestigious shipowners worldwide. In April 2016, SGdP, together with Fratelli Neri, established Piombino Industrie Marittime, expanding its operations in the Italian ship repair sector. The company is now part of the Genova Industrie Navali S.p.A. (GIN) group, which also includes its French sister company Chantier Naval de Marseille (CNdM). Together, SGdP and CNdM operate eight dry docks and over 2 km of equipped repair quays, including dry dock no. 10 (465 m × 85 m), the largest in the Mediterranean. SGdP has evolved from a local maintenance workshop to a global point of reference for repair, conversion and refitting of all types of ship, Ro-Pax vessel upgrades and mid-range vessel construction projects. It employs around 140–160 people, including naval architects, mechanical engineers, skilled workers and emergency response teams, and provides assistance to any vessel anywhere in the world, 24/7/365.
