Overview

San Basilio is a locality in the Río Cuarto Department of Córdoba Province, Argentina, located about 55 km from the city of Río Cuarto along provincial route E86. It is a small agricultural and livestock community whose economy has historically centred on farming, cattle raising, dairy production and poultry breeding. The town was established on 23 August 1928 as a result of railway construction by the Buenos Aires al Pacífico company, which later became the Ferrocarril General San Martín, on the Laboulaye–Sampacho branch. The land was originally part of the Estancia Santa Catalina and was first designated Colonia Orcoví; the present name was suggested by Adelia María Harilaos de Olmos, the first owner of these lands. Italian, Spanish and Arab immigrants settled in the area, forming the basis of the community. The town was partially destroyed by the 1934 Sampacho earthquake. It has a primary school inaugurated in 1932 and its first chapel in 1936. San Basilio is known nationally for the Fiesta Nacional de la Alfalfa, first held at national level in 1978 and rooted in a zonal festival begun in 1961. The official municipal website at sanbasilio.gob.ar functions as the town's civic portal, publishing institutional news, environmental programmes, urban planning information, official bulletins, contact numbers and citizen services. As of the 2022 INDEC census the locality had 3,938 inhabitants, a 20% increase over the 3,160 recorded in 2010.

History

San Basilio was created on 23 August 1928 as a consequence of the railway expansion undertaken by the Buenos Aires al Pacífico company, later the Ferrocarril General San Martín, which was building the Laboulaye–Sampacho branch. This stretch had to cross fields belonging to the Estancia Santa Catalina, so the company bought the land where the present town centre now stands and named it Colonia Orcoví. The current name was suggested to the railway company by Adelia María Harilaos de Olmos, the first owner of these lands; the initial designation had been km 133, as shown in the lot-sale advertisements published in the B.A.P. magazine. From that moment Italian immigrants, mostly engaged in rural work, and Spanish and Arab settlers, generally devoted to commerce, began to arrive. Among the first inhabitants were Bautista Grasso (Italian) and José Balán (Spanish). Religious faith and education were of vital importance to the inhabitants: the primary school was inaugurated in 1932 and the first chapel in 1936. Artistic expression appeared early, with the Belisario Roldán philodramatic troupe founded in 1934 and the Sarmiento philodramatic troupe in 1935, both of which performed numerous theatrical works. On 11 June 1934 the town and its surroundings were partially destroyed by the local Sampacho earthquake, which fortunately caused no fatalities but added psychological shock to the physical impact. The main economic activity has been agriculture and livestock; the locality hosts an important dairy production factory, poultry farms and numerous agricultural establishments of all kinds. It has potable water, electricity, natural gas, sewers, telephone and Internet service and paving on most of its streets. The Fiesta Nacional de la Alfalfa has been held since the zonal festival began in 1961, promoted by residents who were supporters of Club Atlético San Basilio and motivated by the excellent alfalfa production in the area; after meeting government requirements, the first national-level festival was celebrated in 1978 and has continued annually. The Club Atlético San Basilio was founded on 7 May 1936 at the premises of Messrs. Sola and Sacheto. According to the 2022 INDEC census the locality had 3,938 inhabitants, up 20% from 3,160 in 2010.
