Overview

Samworth Brothers is a privately owned British food manufacturing group with roots in the meat trade and a portfolio spanning chilled, ambient and food-to-go products. Its operations supply retailers, foodservice businesses and other customers, producing both retailer own-label goods and products sold under brands owned or operated by the group. Its best-known businesses include Ginsters, a major maker of Cornish pasties and other savoury pastry products; Soreen, a malt loaf brand acquired in 2014; Dickinson & Morris and Walker & Son, associated with Melton Mowbray pork pies; and SCI-MX, a sports-nutrition business acquired in 2015. The company’s origins date to 1896, when George Samworth established a pig-dealing business after working with Birmingham-based pig buyers. The enterprise expanded under his sons Frank and George. A significant early step was Frank Samworth’s 1950 purchase of Nottingham butcher and pie maker TN Parr. In 1969, the acquisition of Pork Farms substantially enlarged the operation. The enlarged business was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1971 as Pork Farms plc and acquired Holland’s Pies in 1972. Northern Foods bought Pork Farms in 1978, separating that publicly traded business from the later Samworth Brothers group. John Samworth subsequently acquired the Ginsters Cornish pasty business in 1977 through Goran Foods. Goran Foods changed its name to Samworth Brothers in 1985, reflecting the involvement of John and David Samworth. The group continued to build its savoury-pastry presence through the 1986 acquisition of Leicester-based Walker & Son and the 1992 purchase and refurbishment of Dickinson & Morris after the latter’s premises had been damaged by fire. These businesses helped establish Samworth Brothers as a prominent producer of certified Melton Mowbray pork pies. In later decades, the group diversified beyond traditional pastry and meat products. Soreen joined the portfolio in 2014, followed by SCI-MX in 2015. In 2017, Samworth Brothers acquired West Cornwall Pasty Company, then a chain operating from high-street locations and motorway service areas. The broader business now includes food-to-go products such as sandwiches, wraps and salads; heat-and-serve meals; sausages and cooked meats; sports-nutrition products; temperature-controlled logistics through Samworth Brothers Supply Chain; and food testing through Westward Laboratories. Samworth Brothers remains closely associated with family ownership, although the group’s chair is identified as non-family executive Nick Linney. Its activities also include community investment and environmental programmes. The company has run a biennial Charity Challenge since 2007 and launched the Samworth Brothers Sports Opportunity Fund in 2013. Between 2013 and 2019, the fund reportedly distributed £1.9 million to 160 community sports projects. Since 2017, the group has stated that it purchases its grid electricity from certified renewable sources and participates in food-waste reduction initiatives. The business has also faced public scrutiny. In 2016, Bradgate Bakery, a Samworth Brothers company, was criticised in parliamentary debate over changes to Sunday, night-shift, Saturday and overtime premiums made around the introduction of the UK National Living Wage. In June 2024, Samworth Brothers Manton Wood voluntarily recalled a range of sandwiches and wraps containing vegetable leaf during an E. coli outbreak affecting products sold through major UK supermarket chains. The recall was described as precautionary, with no tested products reported in the cited material to contain E. coli.

History

Samworth Brothers traces its origins to George Samworth, who established a pig-dealing business in 1896 after working with Birmingham-based pig buyers. George retired in 1930, after which his sons Frank and George continued the enterprise. The family moved further into food production when Frank bought Nottingham butcher and pie maker TN Parr in 1950. In 1969, the acquisition of Pork Farms, a local Nottinghamshire rival, greatly increased the scale of the business. The enlarged operation was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1971 under the name Pork Farms plc. It acquired Holland’s Pies in 1972, but Pork Farms was itself acquired by Northern Foods in 1978. A separate branch of the family’s business developed after John Samworth bought the Ginsters Cornish pasty operation in 1977 through Goran Foods Ltd. Goran Foods was renamed Samworth Brothers in 1985 to reflect the participation of John and David Samworth. Expansion continued through a series of acquisitions. In 1986, Samworth Brothers bought Leicester-based Walker & Son. The business had previously sold its Walkers crisps operation, but its pie-making activities became an important distributor of Melton Mowbray pork pies. In 1992, Samworth Brothers acquired Dickinson & Morris after a fire had destroyed the company’s premises; the site was refurbished in a traditional style. These acquisitions strengthened the group’s position in regional and heritage savoury pastry products. The group later broadened its range beyond pies and pasties. It acquired the Soreen malt loaf brand in 2014 and the SCI-MX sports-nutrition brand in 2015. In 2017, it purchased West Cornwall Pasty Company, which at the time operated shops and outlets at motorway service stations. Alongside branded products, Samworth Brothers developed extensive own-label manufacturing for retailers, covering food-to-go products, prepared meals, cooked meats and other chilled or ambient foods. The group’s operating structure also includes supporting activities. Samworth Brothers Supply Chain provides temperature-controlled distribution to group companies and external customers, while Westward Laboratories in Cornwall provides microbiological and chemical testing services to food-sector clients. Community programmes include the Charity Challenge, a fundraising event held every two years since 2007, and the Samworth Brothers Sports Opportunity Fund, launched in 2013 to support sports projects near group sites. The fund reportedly provided £1.9 million to 160 projects between 2013 and 2019. Environmental initiatives have included buying grid electricity from certified renewable sources since 2017 and participating in food-waste reduction programmes associated with the IGD/WRAP Food Waste Reduction Roadmap and the Champions 12.3 pledge. The group has also described measures focused on reducing impacts, reusing materials, recycling and recovery. Samworth Brothers has attracted criticism over employment practices and political associations. During the introduction of the UK National Living Wage in 2016, Bradgate Bakery was criticised for phasing out enhanced Sunday and shift premiums. The Samworth family’s political donations and reported participation in Conservative Party donor events also generated public discussion. In June 2024, the Manton Wood operation conducted a precautionary recall of sandwiches and wraps during a UK Shigatoxigenic E. coli outbreak. The cited account reported that testing had not found E. coli in the tested products.
