SAME

SAME, originally an acronym for Società Accomandita Motori Endotermici, is an Italian agricultural-machinery brand headquartered in Treviglio, in the province of Bergamo. The business was established in 1942 by brothers Francesco and Eugenio Cassani, whose earlier engineering work had already included the design of a diesel-powered agricultural tractor. SAME initially produced petrol and diesel engines for civil and industrial uses, including winches, cranes, ploughing equipment and firefighting pumps. It moved more directly into agricultural machinery after the Second World War, presenting a three-wheeled motor mower at the 1946 Milan Trade Fair and subsequently developing small universal tractors for farms needing a compact, adaptable power unit. The company became an important participant in Italy's postwar mechanization. Its 3R/10 universal tractor appeared in 1948, followed by petrol-powered 4R models in 1950 and the DA 25 in 1952. The DA 25 was a significant product in the brand's development because it combined a mass-produced four-wheel-drive configuration with an air-cooled diesel engine, a technical characteristic that became closely associated with SAME. The company expanded its product range during the 1950s to include tractors, ploughs, cultivators, harrows, rototillers, backhoes, trailers, irrigation pumps and other implements. During the 1960s and 1970s, SAME broadened its tractor portfolio and developed new engine architectures, including V-configured engines. Models such as the Puledro, Samecar, Centauro, Corsaro and Saturno served different combinations of field work, transport and general agricultural duties. In 1973, SAME acquired Lamborghini Trattori, and in 1979 it acquired the Swiss Hürlimann tractor business. These transactions created the SLH group, combining several established European tractor marques. In 1995, the group acquired the agricultural-machinery division of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz, creating SAME Deutz-Fahr, now known as SDF Group. Product development continued through the late twentieth century with the Explorer, Titan, Frutteto, Argon, Dorado, Silver, Rock, Golden, Rubin and other families. The Explorer, introduced in 1983, became one of the brand's most successful ranges and emphasized road speed and braking capability. The Frutteto line addressed narrow and specialized work in vineyards and orchards, while the Rubin range incorporated Galileo self-levelling technology for sloping terrain. SAME also developed electronically controlled fuel-injection systems, powershift transmissions and other technologies for higher-power tractors. In the twenty-first century, SAME has remained a core tractor brand within SDF's multi-brand portfolio. Its current and recent range has included compact, orchard, vineyard, utility, mid-power and high-power tractors such as Solaris, Tiger, Argon, Dorado, Frutteto, Krypton, Explorer, Virtus, Fortis and Audax, together with front loaders. The brand's market identity is centered on practical agricultural productivity, Italian engineering heritage, broad tractor specialization and integration with SDF's manufacturing, distribution and technology infrastructure. The technical origins of SAME reach back to 1927, when Francesco and Eugenio Cassani designed the Cassani 40CV, a diesel agricultural tractor with a two-cylinder horizontal engine. The machine was manufactured under licence by Officine Gaetano Barbieri. The Cassani brothers later worked on diesel engines for marine and aeronautical applications before establishing SAME in Treviglio in 1942. SAME's first business focused on petrol and diesel engines for civil and industrial equipment. After the war, it entered agricultural machinery more visibly. In 1946, the company presented an 8-horsepower motor mower and a three-wheeled machine that could operate with attached implements. The 3R/10, introduced in 1948, was a compact universal tractor with reversible driving arrangements and variable track. Petrol-powered 4R/10 and 4R/20 models followed in 1950. The 1952 DA 25 represented a major transition toward modern tractor production. The DA 30 DT replaced it in 1957, while the company simultaneously broadened its implement offering. The SAME 240 of 1958 introduced the SAC automatic draft-control system, which helped regulate the tractor's lower hitch and became an important element of the brand's technical identity. In the 1960s, SAME developed tractors for both field work and transport. The Samecar combined a tractor with a load-carrying body, while the Puledro and subsequent V-engine models expanded the range. The Centauro, introduced in 1965, used a V4 engine and offered greater power and road speed than earlier compact machines. During the 1970s, models such as the Corsaro and Saturno extended the range into higher-power categories. Corporate expansion reshaped the company in the 1970s and 1990s. SAME acquired Lamborghini Trattori in 1973 and Hürlimann Traktoren in 1979, forming the SLH group. The group later bought the agricultural-machinery division of Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz in 1995. This created SAME Deutz-Fahr, which subsequently became SDF Group and continued to operate SAME as one of its principal tractor brands. Technology and product specialization continued in the 1980s and 1990s. The Explorer family arrived in 1983 and became a particularly successful range. The company developed high-speed tractors, four-wheel braking, electronically controlled fuel injection and the Electronic PowerShift transmission for more powerful machines. SAME entered the twenty-first century with a broad portfolio spanning compact, specialized, utility and high-horsepower tractors. The Virtus family was highlighted during the brand's 2012 anniversary celebrations, with models designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. Recent and current product families have included Solaris, Tiger, Argon, Dorado, Frutteto, Krypton, Explorer, Virtus, Fortis and Audax, along with front loaders.
