SAM BAT is described by its official site as "The Original Pro Maple Bat," established in 1997. According to the brand's Our Story page, in 1997 Sam Holman introduced the world's first professionally approved maple baseball bat and founded The Original Maple Bat Corporation, creator of the SAM BAT. The brand states that today more than 75% of wooden bats used in professional baseball are made from maple, and that the story began in a small garage in Ottawa, Canada. According to the brand's Our Story page, the story of SAM BAT began with a question posed at Ottawa's historic Mayflower Pub, where professional baseball scout Bill Mackenzie asked his friend Sam Holman whether he could come up with an answer to breaking too many ash bats. Sam immersed himself in research, studying wood species, reading hundreds of patents, and analyzing the physics of baseball, drawing on craftsmanship and problem-solving experience gained while working at Canada's National Arts Centre. He concluded that maple was the answer, noting that unlike ash, rock maple is denser, harder, and more resistant to splintering and wear, and he insisted on using only premium-quality rock maple with straight grain and minimal imperfections. In 1996, Sam crafted his first maple bat from a maple stair banister in the garage of his Ottawa home; when tested at Ottawa Lynx Stadium it impressed players by driving balls deep over the fence. In 1997, Sam Holman introduced the world's first professionally approved maple baseball bat and founded The Original Maple Bat Corporation, creator of the SAM BAT.
