Overview
Salt River Project (SRP) is a community-based, not-for-profit utility providing electric power and water in Arizona. Its website describes prioritizing power, water and customers by keeping rates low, reliability high and conservation top of mind, and states that it has been sustainably managing the Valley's water since 1903. SRP reports that its rates are 37% lower compared to other utilities in the Southwest and that it is #1 in the Southwest for reliability. It offers flexible price plans and energy-saving programs such as the SRP Bring Your Own Thermostat Program (BYOT), and it publishes annual, financial, sustainability and grid performance reports.
History
SRP's official history page describes the long relationship between SRP and water in the Valley, noting that the ancient desert dwellers' canal system set the groundwork for the SRP canal system, which follows many of the same paths today. In the 1860s, a central Arizona gold rush brought an influx of people to the Salt River Valley; in December 1867, a group of 17 new arrivals formed the Swilling Irrigation and Canal Company, planning to take water from the Salt River by canal to grow crops to sell to miners at Wickenburg and the U.S. Cavalry stationed at Fort McDowell. The waterway became known as the Swilling Ditch, later the Town Ditch or the Salt River Valley Canal. By March 1868, farmers under the Swilling Irrigation and Canal Company had harvested their first crops on land near the present-day Arizona State Hospital. SRP's website also states that it has been sustainably managing the Valley's water since 1903 and that it has proudly been a member of the community for more than 120 years.
