Overview
Saige Community Food Bank (Saige Community Food Share Society) is a nonprofit organization that uses food rescue to provide fresh produce and baked goods to the community. It operates as a low-barrier, Two-Spirit, Trans and Gender Diverse safe space, offering a food share program twice a month, a Community Kitchen, a Food Forest community garden, and the Gift of Food program.
History
Saige Community Food Share Society started as an idea between Lauren Kirkey and Ryan Hunter after they were approached at an event by a transgendered woman struggling to access food banks due to identification issues. With the help of Bruce Antecol, Tanya Kuhn, the Metro Vancouver Dream Centre and Mandy Hardwick via Art Bank, that idea became a reality in January 2012. In 2014, the Community Kitchen was started. In 2020, the Gift of Food program was started. In 2021, a Food Forest was started with student volunteers and a grant from UBC.
