Overview

SAG-Gruppe (Starkstromanlagen Aktiengesellschaft) is a German multi-technical services company specialising in the construction, maintenance and operation of power, gas, water and communication networks, as well as energy and data generation and application systems. Founded in 1916 in Berlin as Starkstromanlagen Aktiengesellschaft by Eisenbahnbau-Gesellschaft Becker & Co., it was originally a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mannheimer Aktiengesellschaft für Energiewirtschaft (AfE), which in turn was jointly held by RWE and Elektrizitäts-AG vormals W. Lahmeyer & Co. The company moved its headquarters to Landshut in 1943 and later to Frankfurt, and from 1963 operated as Starkstromanlagen-Gemeinschaft mbH. In 1969 it was renamed Starkstrom-Anlagen-Gesellschaft and became Germany's largest specialist for overhead lines, switchgear and local networks. After passing through various ownership structures — including RWE Solutions AG and Advent International — SAG was acquired by the French SPIE group in 2017. Today it operates as SPIE SAG GmbH, delivering Transmission & Distribution services within SPIE Deutschland & Zentraleuropa. The company is active in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and beyond, and is part of the wider SPIE group, which reported consolidated revenue of €10.4 billion in 2025.

History

SAG-Gruppe was founded on 11 August 1916 as Starkstromanlagen Aktiengesellschaft (SAG) by Eisenbahnbau-Gesellschaft Becker & Co. in Berlin. It was a wholly owned subsidiary of Mannheimer Aktiengesellschaft für Energiewirtschaft (AfE), which was jointly owned by Rheinisch-Westfälische Elektrizitätswerke AG (RWE) and Elektrizitäts-AG vormals W. Lahmeyer & Co. In 1923, SAG expanded abroad with the founding of Banater Elektrizitäts-Aktiengesellschaft in Pančevo, Yugoslavia, but international activities ended during the Great Depression. Between 1931 and 1933, SAG had to dismiss a large part of its workforce. In 1935, SAG merged with Bayrische Aktiengesellschaft für Energiewirtschaft (Bafe), shifting its focus from installation and local network construction to high-voltage and overhead line construction. To escape the destruction of World War II and increasing bombing raids on Berlin, the company moved its headquarters to Landshut, Bavaria, in 1943. In the mid-1950s, Starkstromanlagen Aktiengesellschaft was renamed Starkstrom-Anlagen GmbH, Landshut (SAG). The management of SAG, Rheinelektra-Starkstromanlagen GmbH (RSG) and Lahmeyer-Starkstromanlagen GmbH (LSG) concluded a joint agreement that rationalised administration and created synergies in the core business. From 1957 to 1962, the group operated as Starkstromanlagen-Gemeinschaft, initially as a civil law partnership and from late 1957 as an oHG. In 1957, the group employed 4,000 people and generated DM 57 million in revenue. By 1962, the workforce had grown to 6,200 due to high investments in the energy industry. Due to the economic success, the construction companies of Rheinelektra and Lahmeyer merged with SAG on 1 January 1963 under the name Starkstromanlagen-Gemeinschaft mbH, and the headquarters moved from Landshut to Frankfurt. In 1969, the name was changed again to Starkstrom-Anlagen-Gesellschaft. SAG was now Germany's largest specialist company for the construction of overhead lines, switchgear and local networks. In 1993, SAG acquired the Austrian Schrack Anlagentechnik AG, and in 1994 the French Vigilec group. In the same year, SAG acquired a majority stake in the Polish Elbud Gdańsk Holding S.A. and in the Czech EMG ELEKTRO Milfait-Glatter spol.s.r.o. In 2001, SAG took over 100 percent of the latter. In 1997, SAG acquired a 30 percent stake in the Italian assembly company Nadal Antonio S.r.l. and founded SAG Magyarország Kft. in Hungary. In 1999, SAG was converted into a stock corporation named TESSAG Technische Systeme & Services AG by incorporating the NUKEM Group and some business areas of Lahmeyer AG. With the merger of Lahmeyer AG into RWE AG in February 2000, TESSAG became a direct subsidiary and was renamed RWE Solutions AG in 2001. Although SAG was thus part of the RWE Group in the RWE Energy division and benefited from proximity to this major customer in subsequent years, the company continued to appear on the market under the SAG brand. As part of the concentration on the core business, RWE initiated the sale process for RWE Solutions AG in 2005. The American investor Advent International took over the companies in June 2006 and separated the SAG-Gruppe as a coherent unit from the group. In the same year, SAG Energieversorgungslösungen, SAG Netz- und Energietechnik and SAG Holding GmbH merged to form SAG GmbH with headquarters in Langen. From February 2008, the SAG Group belonged to the portfolio of the Swedish financial investor EQT. In December 2016, EQT initiated the sale of SAG to the French group SPIE, which was completed on 31 March 2017. The company operates in the areas of power grids, gas grids, water grids and communication networks as well as systems and equipment for the generation, provision and application of energy and data.
