Overview

Sachsenröder GmbH & Co. KG is a German family-owned industrial materials manufacturer headquartered in Wuppertal. Founded in 1881 by Gustav-Heinrich Sachsenröder together with the parchment maker Theodor Biesenkamp, the company began as a parchment factory producing parchment paper for packaging and decorative uses. It soon moved into multi-layer parchment and, in 1900, achieved a world first by manufacturing endless vulcanised fibre (Endlos-Vulkanfiber), a dense technical material made from cellulose. Today the company is best known for its vulcanised fibre materials marketed under the SAVUTEC brand and for its GESADUR brand of rollers and wheels. SAVUTEC vulcanised fibre is presented as a high-tech material made from 100 percent renewable raw materials that can decompose without residue in home compost, positioning it as an environmentally friendly alternative in applications where plastics are commonly used. The GESADUR rollers, which also contain a high proportion of natural fibre, are designed to withstand extreme pressure and are used in industrial machinery and conveying applications. A more recent product line is Navutec WH, a vulcanised fibre tree-growth sleeve (Wuchshülle) used in forestry and horticulture to protect young trees. The company has highlighted media coverage of these sustainable tree sleeves made in Wuppertal, for example a report by the Westdeutsche Zeitung. Sachsenröder remains a family business. Since 1996 it has been led by Dirk Sachsenröder, the fourth generation of the founding family. The company is closely tied to its home city of Wuppertal, and Dirk Sachsenröder is active in regional business organisations, including as chairman of the employers' association of the chemical industry in the Bergisches Land region within the VBU, as a partner of the Wuppertal technology centre (W-tec), and as a member of the industry and environment committee of the Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid chamber of industry and commerce. The company operates as a private limited partnership (GmbH & Co. KG) and is not listed on a stock exchange.

History

Sachsenröder GmbH & Co. KG was founded in Wuppertal, Germany. On 19 June 1881, Gustav-Heinrich Sachsenröder signed a service contract with the parchment maker Theodor Biesenkamp to establish a parchment factory. The factory began operations on 1 February 1882 in what is now Wuppertal. Production initially focused on parchment paper for packaging and decorative applications. Gustav-Heinrich Sachsenröder quickly recognised the advantages of hydrated cellulose and soon manufactured multi-layer parchment. His son, Gustav Sachsenröder, became a pioneer in the field. He was the first to succeed in producing endless vulcanised fibre (Endlos-Vulkanfiber), a world first achieved by the company in 1900. This innovation established Sachsenröder as a specialist in vulcanised fibre materials. The third generation, Gustav-Adolf Sachsenröder and Günter Sachsenröder, continued the development of new materials. They expanded the vulcanised fibre product range under the SAVUTEC brand and further built up the production of GESADUR rollers. Since 1996, Dirk Sachsenröder, the fourth generation of the family, has led the company. Like his forebears, he maintains close ties to Wuppertal and is involved in regional business and civic organisations, including as chairman of the employers' association of the chemical industry in the Bergisches Land region within the VBU, as a partner of the Wuppertal technology centre (W-tec), and as a member of the industry and environment committee of the Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid chamber of industry and commerce. In recent years the company has emphasised the sustainability of its materials. SAVUTEC vulcanised fibre is made from 100 percent renewable raw materials and is described as decomposing without residue in home compost, offering a potential contribution to reducing plastic waste. The GESADUR rollers also contain a high proportion of natural fibre. The Navutec WH tree-growth sleeve, made from vulcanised fibre, is a newer product for forestry and horticulture, and has attracted media attention as a sustainable alternative made in Wuppertal.
