The Saarländisches Staatsorchester, associated with the theatre, traces its tradition to 14 June 1912, when the first professional orchestra of the Saarland, the Orchester der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, was founded in Saarbrücken. The roughly 40-member ensemble initially performed as an opera and spa orchestra and also ran its own concert activities, with the städtischer Saalbau as the first venue for local concerts and Victor Cormann as first chief conductor. After the First World War, a new beginning came in 1922 with the appointment of Felix Lederer as Generalmusikdirektor. Today the Saarländische Staatsorchester is described as an ensemble rooted in Saarland cultural life with international reach.
