Overview

S.A. De Boeck & Larcier, commonly known as Groupe De Boeck, is a Belgian francophone publishing group founded in 1889. The group has grown through a series of acquisitions and now comprises several imprints, including De Boeck, De Boeck Supérieur, Larcier, Bruylant, Duculot, Estem, Promoculture, and Solal. It publishes in French and Dutch across a wide range of specialized fields: education, university-level textbooks, science, professional training, and legal information. The group's mission is to develop an independent, international, multi-support publishing hub (books, web, CD-ROM). De Boeck Supérieur, founded in 1986, is the group's academic imprint aimed at the francophone university world. It publishes books in psychology, didactics and pedagogy, economics, management, physics, earth and universe sciences, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, cell biology, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience, and medicine. It also publishes peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Since 2015, De Boeck Supérieur has been part of the Albin Michel group. Other key imprints include Duculot (founded 1919), publisher of the world-renowned French grammar "Le Bon Usage" by Maurice Grevisse, revised by André Goosse; Éditions Larcier and Éditions Bruylant, which publish works for law students and professionals; and Estem, which publishes for medical students, nurses, and paramedical professions. The group was family-owned until 2007, when it was acquired by the Editis publishing group (then a subsidiary of Wendel Investissement, later of Planeta). In April 2011, Editis sold the group to the investment firm Ergon Capital. Today, De Boeck Supérieur operates under Albin Michel, while the legal imprints Larcier and Bruylant continue under the De Boeck & Larcier umbrella. The group remains a significant player in francophone academic and professional publishing.

History

The De Boeck publishing house was founded in 1889. Over the following century, it expanded through the gradual constitution of the Groupe De Boeck, which brought together imprints such as De Boeck, Dessain, Larcier, Duculot, Estem, Bruylant, Promoculture, and Solal. This consolidation accelerated from the late 1980s onward. The group remained a family-owned business until 2007. In March 2007, the group was acquired by the Editis publishing group, which was then a subsidiary of Wendel Investissement and later of Planeta. Under Editis, the group continued its activities in specialized publishing. In April 2011, Editis sold the group to the investment firm Ergon Capital. A key milestone was the founding of De Boeck Supérieur in 1986 as the group's academic imprint for the francophone university market. It grew to publish a wide range of textbooks and journals in psychology, education, economics, management, physics, earth sciences, chemistry, biology, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience, and medicine. In 2015, De Boeck Supérieur became part of the Albin Michel group, while the legal imprints Larcier and Bruylant remained under the De Boeck & Larcier umbrella. Duculot, founded in 1919, is another historic imprint, known for publishing "Le Bon Usage," the world-renowned French grammar by Maurice Grevisse, revised by André Goosse. Estem focuses on medical and paramedical education. The group's mission has been to develop an independent, international, multi-support publishing hub (books, web, CD-ROM) covering school, university, scientific, training, and professional information sectors, publishing in both French and Dutch.
