Overview
SÜDPACK (formally Südpack Beteiligungen SE & Co. KG, with the operating company SÜDPACK Verpackungen SE & Co. KG) is a German manufacturer of high-performance films and packaging materials headquartered in Ochsenhausen, Baden-Württemberg. Founded in 1964 by trained dairy master Alfred Remmele, the company began by developing maturing bags that allowed cheese to ripen through controlled atmosphere exchange. Today it is a leading producer of coextruded flexible and rigid films, laminated films and packaging materials, serving the food, medical, pharmaceutical, non-food and technical industries. The company is entirely owned by the Remmele family and operates exclusively in the B2B sector. SÜDPACK's core competencies include coextrusion, printing (rotogravure and flexographic), laminating and finishing. Its main markets are producers of meat, sausage, cheese, fish and fresh pasta, for which it supplies high-barrier films that protect and extend shelf life. In the medical and pharmaceutical sector, the company offers sterile packaging solutions under the MedGuard brand, including thermoforming films, form-fill-seal systems and prefabricated pouches produced under cleanroom conditions. For non-food applications, it develops functional films and bio-based, biodegradable PLA films under the Planova brand. The group operates production sites in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Poland, and sells its products in more than 70 countries. Key subsidiaries include Ecoform in Erlenmoos (rigid and flexible films), Südpack Medica in Baar, Switzerland (medical sterile packaging), a rotogravure competence center in Bioggio, Switzerland, a finishing and flexographic printing plant in Kłobuck, Poland, and a high-barrier film plant in Grootegast, Netherlands. The company has expanded internationally through acquisitions such as Picotti (2002), Bahpol (2015), Seville Flexpack (2017) and LPF Flexible Packaging (2021). Sustainability is a central strategic focus. SÜDPACK develops material-efficient, recyclable packaging films and pursues circular economy approaches including mechanical and chemical recycling. It cooperates with Carboliq GmbH for chemical recycling and increased its stake in that company to a majority in early 2024. The company also operates mechanical recycling (regranulation) at its Schwendi site. In 2021 SÜDPACK received the German Packaging Award in the "Economic Efficiency" category. In 2025 it ended its cooperation with Kamakshi Flexiprints in India, and in early 2026 it sold its Oak Creek (Wisconsin) production plant to PPC Flex as part of a strategic realignment of its US business.
History
SÜDPACK was founded in 1964 by Alfred Remmele, a trained dairy master, who began developing maturing bags in his own private garage. These bags allowed cheese to mature through a controlled exchange of atmosphere, addressing a specific need in the dairy industry. This marked the beginning of the company's focus on high-performance films for food packaging. In the late 1970s, SÜDPACK opened its first foreign subsidiaries in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, signaling early international expansion. In 1988, the subsidiary Ecoform was founded in neighboring Erlenmoos, expanding the company's range to include rigid and flexible films. The following year, in 1989, SÜDPACK took over CDP Laboratories in Coulmer, France, where it began producing prefabricated pouches for medical and pharmaceutical applications under high quality and hygiene standards. In 2002, SÜDPACK acquired Picotti SA in Bioggio, Ticino, Switzerland, further expanding its expertise in rotogravure printing. A year later, CDP Laboratories was renamed Südpack Medica. In 2006, the company opened a competence center for the development of films and application technology, marking a milestone in service and consulting competence. In 2015, SÜDPACK acquired the Polish packaging finisher Bahpol, based in Kłobuck, to expand its service for international customers. In 2017, the company acquired the US packaging firm Seville Flexpack Corporation in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and also opened a new plant in Schwendi, Germany, which included a competence center for the processing and recycling of reusable materials. In 2018, a new production plant was built in Erolzheim, which was inaugurated in 2020; this site handles warehousing, packaging and shipping to customers worldwide. Also in 2020, SÜDPACK began a cooperation with Kamakshi Flexiprints, based in Ahmedabad, India, which included the construction of a new production facility near Ahmedabad. In 2021, SÜDPACK acquired the film manufacturer LPF Flexible Packaging in Grootegast, Netherlands, which was to be expanded into a competence center for duplex and triplex lamination of high-barrier materials. In the same year, the company received the German Packaging Award in the "Economic Efficiency" category. In early 2024, SÜDPACK increased its 31% stake in Carboliq GmbH to a majority holding, strengthening its commitment to chemical recycling. In 2025, the company ended its cooperation with Kamakshi Flexiprints. In early 2026, as part of a strategic realignment of its US business, SÜDPACK sold its production plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, to packaging specialist PPC Flex. Throughout its history, SÜDPACK has remained entirely owned by the Remmele family and has grown into a leading international manufacturer of high-performance films, with production sites in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Poland, selling to over 70 countries.
