Overview

Süddekor GmbH was a German manufacturer of decorative surfaces, specializing in decor papers, release papers and finish foils for the furniture and laminate flooring industries. Headquartered in Laichingen in Baden-Württemberg, the company supplied the national and international wood-based materials industry and ranked among the largest decor producers for furniture and flooring surfaces in Germany. Its production was based on the rotogravure printing principle, and it also operated finishing foil lines for decorative surfaces. The company was founded in 1974 as SÜDDEKOR Druckerei GmbH & Co. KG in Laichingen. Over the following decades it expanded through new subsidiaries and acquisitions, including DAKOR Melamin Imprägnierungen GmbH in Heroldstatt (1995), SÜDDEKOR Art in Willich (1998), and its first U.S. plant, SÜDDEKOR LLC in Agawam (2000). In 2004 the businesses were brought together under the strategic umbrella of 2D Holding, alongside Dakor and Addis, and a second U.S. plant was established in East Longmeadow. Further expansion followed in 2008 with a second impregnation plant in Biscoe, USA, and the takeover of the business operations of Württembergische Kunststoffplattenwerke GmbH & Co. KG (WKP), which added nanocoating technology and the release paper product segment. By 2009 the group reported revenue of approximately €230 million and about 750 employees worldwide, with six locations, 13 rotogravure presses, four coating lines, ten laboratory printing machines, four engraving machines and eleven impregnation channels. Annual production was around 40,000 tonnes, approximately 110 million m² of foil and approximately 220 million m² of impregnation, with roughly 100 new decor developments per year. Revenue remained around €240 million in 2010 and 2012, with employee numbers around 770–780. At the end of 2013 the Süddekor Group was acquired by the listed Surteco SE for a purchase price of €99 million. In 2014 sales were merged with Surteco, and between 2014 and 2016 decor printing was relocated from Laichingen to Surteco's plant in Buttenwiesen, about 100 kilometers away, accompanied by job reductions. The Süddekor GmbH brand was absorbed into Surteco SE, which is headquartered in Buttenwiesen and is a leading international specialist for surface technologies.
