Overview

SÜC Bus & Aquaria is a municipal services company based in Coburg, Bavaria, Germany. It is a subsidiary of Städtische Werke Überlandwerke Coburg (SÜC) GmbH, the local utility holding that provides electricity, gas, water, heat and mobility services in the Coburg region. The company operates two distinct public-service divisions: the city bus network for Coburg and surrounding communities, and the Aquaria indoor-outdoor swimming pool complex. The bus division was established in 2001, although organised city bus services in Coburg date back to 1948. Today the network serves Coburg and the neighbouring municipalities of Ahorn, Dörfles-Esbach, Niederfüllbach and Lautertal, with occasional services to Schloss Rosenau and Rödental station. The catchment area has roughly 55,000 residents, and about 15,000 passengers use the buses daily. The fleet consists of low-floor buses, and the company has previously invested in alternative drivetrains, including 15 natural-gas buses acquired between 2001 and 2006. Operations run from early morning until around 21:00 on weekdays, with later services provided by on-call shared taxis (Anruf-Sammel-Taxen). Since 1 January 2024, the city and district of Coburg have been part of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN) transport association. The Aquaria leisure facility traces its origins to an outdoor pool opened in 1926 and an indoor pool added in 1973. The combined complex was renamed Aquaria in 1998 and transferred from the city of Coburg to SÜC. A major renovation and new build was completed at the end of 2004. The indoor area includes a sports pool, a teaching pool, a children's pool and a four-season pool with level access to the outdoors, plus an 86-metre water slide. The outdoor area features a sports pool, a wave pool with a separate children's wave pool, a four-season pool with a covered current channel, a diving tower and a water playground. As a subsidiary of the municipal utility, SÜC Bus & Aquaria is ultimately owned by the city of Coburg and surrounding public bodies. It is not listed on any stock exchange. The company is part of the SÜC group, whose broader activities include energy supply, broadband expansion and e-mobility. Its administrative offices, operations control centre and workshop are located in a building complex between Bamberger Strasse and Uferstrasse in southern Coburg, where buses of the company and some DB Frankenbus vehicles are maintained.

History

The history of public transport in Coburg goes back to 1930, when initial efforts were made to establish city bus lines. These efforts only succeeded from 1939, and service was limited during the war years. After the Second World War, city buses ran regularly again. On 15 November 1948, scheduled operations started with three buses (two Büssing and one Mercedes). From 15 December 1948, the Städtische Werke took over the operation of the city omnibuses. At that time the route network was 7.5 kilometres long. Five years later, ten buses were operating on a network of 40.6 kilometres. The network expanded gradually: from 1951 buses served Wüstenahorn; in 1959 the Judenberg quarter was added; in 1964 the Ketschendorf slope; in 1966 the Lauersgraben; in 1967 the Heimatring; in 1971 the Ahorn district of Eicha and Lautertal-Unterlauter; and in 1972 the Coburg district of Beiersdorf. Until the afternoon of 28 November 2003, the Marktplatz served as the central hub for all SÜC city bus lines. It was replaced by the Rendezvous stop at Theaterplatz and the central bus station (ZOB) next to Coburg station on Lossaustrasse. The bus operating division itself was founded in 2001. In the same period, from 2001 to 2006, a total of 15 city buses with natural-gas propulsion were procured. In 2007 the first bus of the O405 series was retired, with two more following in late summer 2010 due to an accident and a technical defect. In December 2010, four new MAN Lion's City buses entered the depot, replacing two O405 buses from 1988. In 2015 the last three O405 N buses were retired. At the end of 2009, 30 buses were equipped with double screens for passenger information, showing the next five stops on the left and a mix of news and advertising on the right. The MAN Lion's City buses acquired at the end of 2010 and Citaros procured in subsequent years also received double screens. Until November 2011, acoustic stop announcements were made only sporadically by the driver; since November 2011 they have been made by an automatic female voice. The Aquaria swimming complex has a separate history. The outdoor pool on Rosenauer Strasse opened in 1926, and the adjacent indoor pool opened in 1973. In 1998 the pools were renamed "Aquaria" and transferred from the city of Coburg to SÜC. The last major conversion and new construction was completed at the end of 2004. The indoor pool building contains four different pools: a sports pool, a non-swimmer or teaching pool, a children's pool and a four-season pool with level access to the outside. The 86-metre water slide begins and ends inside the building but runs outside for the remaining section. The outdoor area offers a sports pool, a wave pool with a separate children's wave pool, and a four-season pool with a covered current channel. There is also a diving tower and a water playground for children. On 1 January 2024, the district of Coburg and the city of Coburg joined the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN), integrating local bus services into a larger transport association. The company's administration, operations control centre and workshop are located in a building complex between Bamberger Strasse and Uferstrasse in southern Coburg, where all buses of the transport operator and some buses of DB Frankenbus (Omnibusverkehr Franken, OVF) are maintained and parked. The current city transport fleet consists of 39 low-floor buses.
