Overview

Sàpiens is a Catalan-language monthly magazine dedicated to popular history, published in Barcelona and distributed across the Catalan-speaking territories. Launched in November 2002, it was created in a context where Catalan-language magazines were scarce on newsstands, and it quickly became a market leader in its sector in Catalonia. The magazine is owned by the media group Grup Cultura 03 and is headquartered at Carrer de Premià 15 in Barcelona. Its editorial mission is to make history accessible to a broad public, covering topics from prehistory to the contemporary era, including politics, culture, economy, nature, gastronomy and science. The magazine's motto is "Descobreix la teva història" (Discover your history). It is sold in kiosks in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, in bookshops in the Valencian Community, and in electronic format online. According to the Spanish Oficina de Justificació de la Difusió (OJD), in 2007 Sàpiens had an average print run of 31,199 copies and average sales of 21,395 copies. The Baròmetre de la Comunicació i la Cultura, in its second wave of 2009 (March 2008–February 2009), reported an average of 93,000 monthly readers in Catalonia. The magazine has been directed by Eduard Voltas (November 2002–October 2003), Jordi Creus (November 2003–October 2010) and Clàudia Pujol (since November 2010). Its first issue featured a cover story by Jordi Finestres on "The Catalan spy who deceived Hitler", about the double agent Joan Pujol Garcia (alias Garbo), based on recently declassified Top Secret documents. Sàpiens also maintains a digital presence through its website sapiens.cat, which offers news, articles and interactive content such as word searches, crosswords and puzzles.

History

Sàpiens was launched in November 2002 by Grup Enciclopèdia Catalana, motivated by the success of recently appeared magazines such as Descobrir Catalunya and Descobrir Cuina, and by the scarcity of Catalan-language magazines on newsstands in the Catalan Countries. The first issue featured a cover story by Jordi Finestres on "The Catalan spy who deceived Hitler", about the double agent Joan Pujol Garcia (alias Garbo), based on recently declassified Top Secret documents from the British secret services. The magazine was distributed from the start in all kiosks in Catalonia and in some kiosks and bookshops in the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Country. It soon began regular distribution in all kiosks of the Balearic Islands. From the beginning it positioned itself as the sales leader in its market sector in Catalonia, regardless of the language of publication. The magazine was initially edited by Grup Enciclopèdia Catalana; it later became part of the media group Grup Cultura 03. Since its first issue, the magazine has been sold in digital format on sapiensdigital.com (now closed), and the electronic format continues to be sold on specialised national and international digital press platforms. The editorial direction has changed over time: Eduard Voltas (November 2002 – October 2003), Jordi Creus (November 2003 – October 2010) and Clàudia Pujol (since November 2010). The magazine maintains a website, sapiens.cat, which offers news, articles and interactive puzzles. In 2007, according to OJD, the magazine had an average print run of 31,199 copies and average sales of 21,395 copies. In 2009, the Baròmetre de la Comunicació i la Cultura reported 93,000 monthly readers in Catalonia.
