Overview
Rytų skirstomieji tinklai (RST) was a Lithuanian energy utility company responsible for electricity distribution in eastern and southern Lithuania. It was established on 31 December 2001 as a joint-stock company from the electricity networks of Vilnius, Utena, Alytus and Panevėžys, which had belonged to the state energy company Lietuvos energija. RST supplied nearly 750,000 customers over a territory of almost 35,000 km² and employed 3,075 people including subsidiaries. Its main subsidiaries were UAB Elektros tinklo paslaugos (maintenance and construction of power lines), UAB Rytra (vehicle rental) and UAB Tetas (maintenance and construction of transformer stations). In the early 2000s the Lithuanian state sought to privatise the distribution companies. By the end of 2002, the German utility E.ON Ruhrgas held nearly 11% of RST shares, with 3% in free float. During 2003, E.ON Ruhrgas increased its stake to 20.3% through a share swap for holdings in Lietuvos energija and Lietuvos elektrinė, while further shares were sold to Lithuanian private investors, leaving the state with 72%. While Vakarų skirstomieji tinklai (VST) was fully privatised at the end of 2003, the sale of RST failed. After E.ON Ruhrgas did not submit a concrete offer, only the Estonian state utility Eesti Energia remained as a bidder. Although Eesti Energia offered a comparable price to that for VST, the sale was cancelled, reportedly because Eesti Energia was heavily indebted and future ownership was uncertain. RST thus remained state-owned. On 27 May 2008, RST was integrated into the national energy company Leo LT. The company's revenue grew from nearly 700 million LTL in 2003 to 1.07 billion LTL (310 million euros) in 2007, with a profit of 74 million LTL in 2007, after losses of the same magnitude in 2004 and profits fluctuating around 20 million LTL in 2005/2006. General Manager Arvydas Tarasevičius took office on 30 April 2009, succeeding Rimantas Vaitkus, who had been appointed General Manager of RST in October 2008 as successor to Gintautas Mažeika, but had meanwhile risen to head Leo LT (again succeeding Gintautas Mažeika). The company's website was rst.lt.
