Overview

RWTÜV (Rheinisch-Westfälischer Technischer Überwachungsverein) is a German technical inspection association headquartered in Essen. It traces its origins to 19th-century steam boiler inspection associations, including the Kesselrevisionsverein in Siegen. Through mergers, the Technische Überwachungsverein Essen e. V. was formed in 1939, and in 1969 the association adopted its current name, RWTÜV. Today, RWTÜV e. V. is a registered voluntary association with over 2,000 member companies from industry and commerce. Its operational business was transferred in 1993 to RWTÜV AG, now RWTÜV GmbH. The RWTÜV Group operates in three business fields: insurance services (grouped under the van Ameyde group), telecommunications (notably the Cetecom group and CTC Advanced), and energy & environment. In the 2020 financial year, the group reported total revenue of EUR 186.5 million with around 1,700 employees; insurance services accounted for about EUR 113 million, telecommunications about EUR 45 million, and energy & environment about EUR 29 million. RWTÜV is also a shareholder in TÜV NORD AG, holding 36.1% alongside TÜV Nord e. V. and TÜV Hannover/Sachsen-Anhalt e. V., following the 2004 founding of TÜV Nord GmbH (renamed TÜV NORD AG in 2005).

History

RWTÜV's history begins in the 19th century with the establishment of steam boiler inspection associations, including the Kesselrevisionsverein in Siegen and other Dampfkesselüberwachungsvereine. These early associations were formed to ensure the safety of steam boilers, a critical technology of the industrial era. Through a series of mergers, the Technische Überwachungsverein Essen e. V. was created in 1939. In 1969, the association received its current name, Rheinisch-Westfälischer Technischer Überwachungsverein e. V. (RWTÜV). Over time, RWTÜV e. V. grew into a voluntary association with more than 2,000 member companies from industry and commerce. In 1993, the operational business of RWTÜV e. V. was transferred to RWTÜV AG, which later became RWTÜV GmbH. In 2004, RWTÜV e. V., together with TÜV Nord e. V. (Hamburg) and TÜV Hannover/Sachsen-Anhalt e. V., founded TÜV Nord GmbH, which was renamed TÜV NORD AG in 2005. RWTÜV GmbH holds a 36.1% stake in TÜV NORD AG, making it one of three shareholders. Today, the RWTÜV Group operates with around 1,700 employees across three business fields: insurance services (van Ameyde group), telecommunications (Cetecom group and CTC Advanced), and energy & environment. In the 2020 financial year, the group generated total revenue of EUR 186.5 million, with insurance services contributing about EUR 113 million, telecommunications about EUR 45 million, and energy & environment about EUR 29 million.
