Overview

Rusty's Hawaiian is a family-owned coffee farm, mill and roastery located in the Ka'u District on the southern side of the Big Island of Hawaii. The company was founded by Rusty Obra and his wife Lorie Obra, who moved to Hawaii from the U.S. mainland with no prior farming experience. After Rusty's death, Lorie carried on the business, vowing to realize his vision of producing some of the world's best beans. Today, the operation is run by Lorie and her daughter Joan Obra, along with Joan's husband Ralph, and it has become known as one of the world's top coffee producers, earning numerous awards and recognition from specialty-coffee industry publications such as Coffee Review. Rusty's Hawaiian specializes in 100% island coffees, with a focus on single-origin Hawaiian beans from the Ka'u and Kona regions. Their product line includes the Ka'u Classic Dark Roast, Ka'u 'Hydro' Honey Typica, Kona Maragogype, Ka'u Natural Typica, and Ka'u Classic Peaberry, among others. The company sells its coffees online through its website, as well as through select retailers in Hawaii. They also offer gift cards and bundles, such as the 'Island Hopper' Bundle. The brand's story is deeply personal, rooted in the legacy of Rusty Obra and his parting advice: 'Have a positive attitude, be thankful and have faith.' This philosophy drives the company's commitment to quality and community. Rusty's Hawaiian has been recognized in Coffee Review's Top 10 Coffees of 2023 and Top 30 Coffees of 2022, among other accolades. The company remains a private, family-owned enterprise, operating its own farm, mill and roastery in Hawaii.

History

Rusty's Hawaiian was founded by Rusty Obra and his wife Lorie Obra, who moved to Hawaii from the U.S. mainland with no farming experience. They established a coffee farm, mill and roastery in the Ka'u District on the southern side of the Big Island of Hawaii. Rusty's retirement goal was to make some of the world's best beans. When Rusty fell ill and eventually died, the family was uncertain whether to continue the business. Lorie decided to carry on alone, determined to realize Rusty's vision. Her determination caught the attention of leaders in the specialty-coffee industry, and with advice and experimentation, Rusty's Hawaiian became known as one of the world's top coffee producers. Joan Obra, the daughter of Rusty and Lorie, and her husband Ralph later joined Lorie in Hawaii to help run the operation. The company has earned numerous awards and recognitions, including Coffee Review's Top 10 Coffees of 2023 and Top 30 Coffees of 2022. Today, Rusty's Hawaiian remains a family-owned and operated business, honoring the legacy of its founder.
