Overview

RuneSoft is a German video game company founded in 2000 in Tübingen, in the southwest of Germany, originally under the name e.p.i.c. interactive entertainment gmbh. It changed its name to RuneSoft in 2005 and is today based in Kesselsdorf, a district of Wilsdruff near Dresden. Rather than developing its own titles, RuneSoft specialises in porting popular computer games to alternative platforms — initially the Apple Macintosh, Linux and Amiga, and in more recent years iOS — and in publishing and marketing those ports, wherever possible on a worldwide basis. The company's first products were completely ported and published by RuneSoft: Adventuresoft's classic adventure "Simon the Sorcerer 2" and Topware's real-time strategy game "Earth 2140", both released for Apple Macintosh and Amiga computers. Over the following years RuneSoft built a catalogue of ports for Mac and Linux, including "Cultures: Northland" (originally by Funatics), Spellbound Entertainment's "Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood", "Airline Tycoon Deluxe", Deck 13's "Ankh" — voted Game of the Year in Germany — and the rest of the Ankh series as well as "Jack Keane". The company also moved into children's games with dtp young entertainment's "Pet Doc" in 2007, and added Magnussoft's "Lemure", CDV's/Nival's "Blitzkrieg" and Topware's "Dream Pinball 3D" to its Mac catalogue. RuneSoft has worked with well-known developers and publishers such as Zuxxez Entertainment, Funatics, Spellbound, MC2/Wanadoo, Magnussoft, Nival, bhv, Deck 13, 10Tacle Studios, dtp entertainment and CDV. Its published titles span adventure, strategy, casual and puzzle games, including the RHEM series, the Ankh series, "Jack Keane", "Gorky 17", "Europa Universalis 3", "Hearts of Iron III", "Knights and Merchants", "X3 Terran Conflict" and many casual titles. Beginning in 2012 RuneSoft also distributed some catalogue games through the digital distributor Desura. In recent years the company has focused increasingly on casual and mobile titles, releasing games such as "The Legend of Rome: The Wrath of Mars" and "Heroes of Rome: Dangerous Roads" on the App Store and Mac App Store, and bringing "RHEM II: The Cave SE" and "Lisssn" to Steam. RuneSoft remains a privately held German company and continues to operate its official website at rune-soft.com.

History

RuneSoft was founded in 2000 in Tübingen, in the southwest of Germany, under the name e.p.i.c. interactive entertainment gmbh. The company's initial products, completely ported and published by RuneSoft itself, were Adventuresoft's classic adventure "Simon the Sorcerer 2" and Topware's real-time strategy game "Earth 2140", both released for Apple Macintosh and Amiga computers. In 2003 the company released the empire builder "Cultures: Northland", originally developed by Funatics and one of the most popular empire-building games of its day; this and the following titles were released for both Mac and Linux computers. In 2005 the company changed its name to RuneSoft. The following years saw Spellbound Entertainment's "Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood" and "Airline Tycoon Deluxe" arrive on these systems. In 2006 RuneSoft ported Deck 13's first adventure game "Ankh", which was voted Game of the Year in Germany, to Mac and Linux. In the following years the other titles of the Ankh series as well as Deck 13's adventure "Jack Keane" were ported for these systems. A sidestep into the world of games for children was made in 2007 when RuneSoft adapted dtp young entertainment's "Pet Doc", a very popular children's game in both Germany and the US, to the Mac. "Lemure", a strategy game inspired by a popular Amiga game and originally developed by Magnussoft from Dresden, was added to the Mac catalogue in 2008. The following months saw the release of CDV's/Nival's RTS hit "Blitzkrieg" and Topware's "Dream Pinball 3D" for the Macintosh. Most of the year 2011 was spent updating the catalogue for the new Mac. RuneSoft's focus has always been to port popular computer games to alternative computer systems such as the Apple Macintosh and Linux, and to handle the publishing and marketing for the ported games, wherever possible on a worldwide basis. The porting work to the different platforms is completely handled by RuneSoft. Over the years the company has worked with well-known developers and publishers such as Zuxxez Entertainment, Funatics, Spellbound, MC2/Wanadoo, Magnussoft, Nival, bhv, Deck 13, 10Tacle Studios, dtp entertainment and CDV. Its published catalogue includes the RHEM series, the Ankh series, "Jack Keane", "Gorky 17", "Europa Universalis 3", "Hearts of Iron III", "Knights and Merchants", "X3 Terran Conflict" and many casual and puzzle titles. Beginning in 2012 RuneSoft began distributing some games from its catalogue through the digital distributor Desura. In later years the company increasingly focused on casual and mobile titles, releasing games such as "The Legend of Rome: The Wrath of Mars" and "Heroes of Rome: Dangerous Roads" on the App Store and Mac App Store, and bringing "RHEM II: The Cave SE" and "Lisssn" to Steam. The company is headquartered in Kesselsdorf, a district of Wilsdruff near Dresden, and remains a privately held German company.
