Overview
The Rudolf-Schober-Hütte is a mountain shelter (Schutzhütte) of Category I belonging to the Sektion Stuhlecker of the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein). It sits at 1,667 metres above sea level in the Schladminger Tauern range in the Austrian state of Styria. The hut lies on the Zentralalpenweg (Austrian long-distance hiking trail 02) and serves hikers and mountaineers in the region. During the summer season the hut offers 28 overnight places, divided into 14 beds in rooms and 14 mattress dormitory places. In winter, a winter room with 8 sleeping places is available, accessible with the Alpine Club key. The hut is a typical alpine club shelter, providing simple accommodation and food for visitors. The history of the hut goes back to 1894, when the Sektion Stuhlecker bought a plot of land on the Grafenalpe in the municipality of Krakauhintermühlen in the Schladminger Tauern. They built a shelter and named it after their first chairman, Rudolf Schober. It was opened on 1 September 1895. Due to financial difficulties of the section, the hut had to be closed temporarily. In 1960 it was renovated, expanded and rebuilt, and a supply road was constructed. The new Rudolf-Schober-Hütte was ceremonially reopened in 1966. The hut is a starting point for numerous hikes and summit tours. Access routes include from the south through the Etrachbachtal valley: from the car park at Etrachsee (1,374 m) on a forest road in 1½ hours, from Krakauhintermühlen (1,305 m) in 2½ hours, and from Krakaudorf (1,180 m) in 2¾ hours. From the northeast, from St. Nikolai im Sölktal (1,127 m) through the Bräualmbachtal valley and over the Schimpelscharte (2,273 m) in 5½ hours. Neighbouring huts are the Grazer Hütte (1,897 m) at 10 hours walking time, the Breitlahnhütte (1,070 m) at 8½ hours, and the Putzentalalm (1,354 m) at 7½ hours. Summit tours from the hut include the Bauleiteck (2,424 m) in 2½ hours, the Süßleiteck (2,507 m) in 3 hours, the Rupprechtseck (2,591 m) in 3¾ hours, the Predigtstuhl (2,543 m) in 6¾ hours, the Schimpelspitz (2,413 m) in 2½ hours, and the Flederweißspitz (2,386 m) in 2 hours. There is also a tour to the lower (1,891 m) and upper Wildenkarsee (2,053 m), taking about 1½ hours to the lower lake and about 2½ hours to the upper lake. The Rudolf-Schober-Hütte is a notable alpine facility in the Schladminger Tauern, maintained by the Austrian Alpine Club and used by hikers on the Zentralalpenweg and other trails.
