Overview

RTP Notícias is the all-news television channel of Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP), Portugal's state-owned public broadcasting group. The service provides rolling national and international news, live breaking-news coverage, political and current-affairs programming, economic reporting, sports coverage, analysis and related digital output. Its present identity follows several name and positioning changes that began with its launch as NTV in October 2001. The channel originated in Porto through Porto TV - Informação e Multimédia, a company established in 1999 by PT Multimédia, Lusomundo and the former RTP. The original concept was a cable news service with a strong Porto and northern Portugal orientation. RTP Porto's Monte da Virgem facilities supplied technical expertise and playout support, giving the project a close operational relationship with RTP from the beginning. NTV launched on 15 October 2001 and initially combined continuous news with programmes devoted to sport, economics, debate and regional affairs. Its first outside live broadcast was transmitted from Vila de Rei on 15 November 2001. RTP acquired the remaining privately held interest in the channel in August 2002, after having held a minority stake. This ownership change was followed by attempts to restructure the schedule and broaden the service beyond its original regional emphasis. Audience and budget pressures affected the early operation, while the withdrawal of journalists and the cancellation or reduction of non-news programming reflected the channel's uncertain position within the RTP portfolio. A proposed RTP Regiões identity was considered in 2003 as part of the effort to make the service more nationally relevant. Following the creation of the modern RTP through the merger of the former television broadcaster RTP and radio broadcaster RDP, the channel became RTPN in May 2004. The change marked a clearer integration into the national public-broadcasting structure. RTPN introduced new graphics and scheduling in 2005 and moved to a full 24-hour schedule in September 2008, replacing its previous early-morning simulcast of Euronews. From the middle of 2009, the service also became available through cable operators in Angola and Mozambique. In 2011, its independent news team was closed and integrated with RTP's wider news operation. The channel was renamed RTP Informação in September 2011, a change intended to reduce its association with Porto and the north and to emphasize a national information remit. In October 2015 it became RTP3. The RTP3 identity was used for the Portuguese service and, from 2016, an international feed known as RTP3 Internacional. The channel entered Portugal's digital terrestrial television platform on 1 December 2016 and has also been carried on Cape Verde's digital terrestrial network. RTP Notícias is the latest identity in this sequence. RTP announced a return to the name in 2025, presenting the change as a renewed commitment to news. The rebrand was introduced on 12 October 2025 during coverage of Portugal's local elections, following the presentation of the new offer on 9 October. Ivity developed the visual identity and Itsanashow Studio produced programme introductions. The service continues to combine linear television, live streaming and online news through RTP's broader distribution ecosystem. Its role is that of a public-service news outlet: broad national coverage, continuous updates and live reporting rather than a narrowly specialized commercial news channel.

History

RTP Notícias began as NTV, a Porto-based cable news channel launched on 15 October 2001. The service was developed by Porto TV - Informação e Multimédia, a company registered in 1999 through an arrangement involving PT Multimédia and the municipality of Porto. The original shareholders included PT Multimédia, Lusomundo and the former RTP. Its intended audience was initially concentrated in Porto and northern Portugal, although the channel was designed to use cable, satellite and internet distribution. The new channel operated from facilities associated with RTP Porto at Monte da Virgem, near Vila Nova de Gaia. Its early schedule included a main evening bulletin, sports and economics programmes, and a debate programme. NTV also pursued live reporting, transmitting its first outside live broadcast from Vila de Rei on 15 November 2001. The launch period was marked by uncertainty over the channel's editorial scope, which combined regional, national and wider European ambitions. News director Carlos Magno left the role shortly after launch. RTP fully acquired the service on 9 August 2002, having previously held a 25 percent share while PT Multimédia held the balance. The channel faced audience and financial pressure during its first years. A proposed RTP Regiões identity was intended to give it a more national remit, and staffing and programming were reduced as RTP reviewed the service's future. The channel subsequently became part of the reorganized RTP structure created through the merger of the former television and radio broadcasters. On 31 May 2004, the service was renamed RTPN. New graphics and a revised schedule followed in 2005. The channel expanded to a full 24-hour schedule on 29 September 2008, ending its previous early-morning reliance on Euronews. It also gained distribution through cable operators in Angola and Mozambique from around 2009. In 2011, the channel's separate news operation was merged with RTP's broader news team. The name RTP Informação was introduced on 19 September 2011. This identity was intended to emphasize a national information service and to move away from the channel's earlier regional association. On 5 October 2015, it became RTP3. An international version, RTP3 Internacional, began broadcasting during 2016. RTP3 entered Portugal's digital terrestrial television service on 1 December 2016 and was also carried on Cape Verde's digital terrestrial network. The channel's programming has generally centered on continuous news, but it has also carried selected sports and event-related output. Examples include coverage connected with the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, and analysis around European Championships and FIFA World Cups. In 2024, it announced the return of The Daily Show to Portuguese television with subtitled broadcasts delayed by one day. In 2025, RTP announced another identity and programming change. The RTP3 website changed to RTP Notícias on 8 October, the revised news offer was presented on 9 October, and the on-air rebrand took place on 12 October during coverage of the 2025 Portuguese local elections. Ivity created the new look, while Itsanashow Studio developed programme introductions. Under the RTP Notícias name, the service continues as RTP's dedicated rolling-news channel, distributed through television, RTP's digital platforms and selected international outlets.
