Overview

RT-Labs is a privately owned Swedish software company that helps industrial product developers integrate fieldbus and industrial Ethernet communication into embedded systems. Its roots go back to consultancy operations within Telelogic, a company known for model-based development of embedded systems, and RT-Labs has operated as an independent privately owned company since 2002. From its base in Gothenburg, Sweden, it serves industrial companies worldwide that need their products to comply with multiple communication standards. The company's core proposition is to simplify industrial communication. Industrial products aimed at multiple markets often have to support several fieldbus and industrial Ethernet protocols, which historically has been a complex and time-consuming part of product development. RT-Labs addresses this with a suite of communication stacks, a unified multi-protocol platform called U-Phy, communication hardware such as evaluation kits and modules, embedded operating systems including RT-Labs Linux and RT-Kernel, and development tools such as STIG, Pilot, EtherCAT Explorer and EtherCAT Slave Editor. It also offers deployment licenses, maintenance and technical support. RT-Labs combines software components, development tools, work processes and consultancy services. Its stated mission is to improve the efficiency of customers' product development so that new products can be launched faster, cheaper and with better quality. The company reports more than 400 successful projects and works with leading silicon vendors and hardware partners, including Infineon, Microchip, STMicroelectronics, Br. Voss and Kvaser. It also maintains an open-source presence on GitHub, offering a limited code base for free while reserving full functionality for paid development plans. RT-Labs remains privately owned and active, positioned as a specialist supplier of industrial communication software and tools rather than a general-purpose software vendor. Its licensing model charges for products produced and for deployment, aligning revenue with customers' commercial success.

History

RT-Labs traces its origins to consultancy operations carried out as part of Telelogic, a company described by RT-Labs as a world-leading firm in the field of model-based development of embedded systems. Working with Telelogic's broad range of clients gave the team experience across many industries worldwide. In 2002 the business became a privately owned company, RT-Labs, and it has remained privately owned since then. During its early years as an independent company, RT-Labs worked with a large number of clients in many industrial spheres, gaining a deeper understanding of their everyday realities and of what works and what does not in embedded software development. Drawing on these experiences and insights, the company decided in 2006 to transform its vision and accumulated experience into products that could help companies develop software for embedded systems. This marked the shift from a purely consultancy-driven business toward a product company offering software components, development tools and work processes alongside services. The company's guiding principle became that clients should be able to focus wholly on their customers and on demands for function and performance, while RT-Labs provides a virtually universal software platform and a development process that saves time and money. Testing automation was added as an additional offering and is presented as an exceptional quality enhancer. RT-Labs states that its clients confirm it drives a highly competitive best-practice concept for the entire chain in embedded systems development, and it reports more than 400 successful projects. Over time RT-Labs built out a portfolio spanning communication stacks for industrial protocols, communication hardware, embedded operating systems and development tools. Its U-Phy platform was introduced as a way to bring all major industrial protocols into a product through a single unified API, with hardware free to use. The company also adopted an open-source approach, publishing a limited code base on GitHub for free while reserving full functionality, support, tools and upkeep for paid development plans. Its licensing model charges customers for products produced and for deployment, and it offers product maintenance and technical support. RT-Labs has established partnerships with leading suppliers to offer complete solutions. Its silicon vendor partners include Infineon, Microchip and STMicroelectronics, and its hardware partners include Br. Voss Ingenjörsfirma AB, its preferred partner for development and manufacturing of hardware, and Kvaser, for which RT-Labs has served as Technical Associate since 2011. The company remains a privately owned, active Swedish business based in Gothenburg.
