Overview

Royal Holdings is the corporate entity behind the Royal Group, a Japanese food and hospitality business. Its official site presents the group under the slogan 'Food and Hospitality' and lists group companies including Royal Food Service (operating chains such as Royal Host, Tenya, Shakey's and Sizzler), Royal Contract Service, RNT Hotels, Royal Co., Ltd., Tabisuru, Royal Management, and overseas units in Singapore and Vietnam. The group traces its origins to 1951 in Fukuoka, when it began in-flight catering and café operations at Fukuoka Airport and established Royal Bakery; the restaurant business followed with the opening of Royal Nakasu Honten in 1953 and the establishment of Royal Co., Ltd. in 1956. Royal Host, its suburban family-restaurant chain, opened its first store in Kurosaki, Kitakyushu in 1971. The company listed on the Fukuoka Stock Exchange in 1978 and later on the Osaka and Tokyo exchanges.

History

The Royal Group's history begins in the 1950s in Fukuoka. In October 1951, coinciding with the start of Japan Airlines domestic operations, the group began loading in-flight meals and operating a café at Fukuoka Airport, serving the first flight's passengers sandwiches wrapped in furoshiki and tea in a thermos. In December 1951 it began confectionery and bakery operations in Katakasu, Fukuoka, establishing Royal Bakery Co., Ltd.; the name 'Royal' was chosen for its associations with 'flying out into the world' and 'a regal bearing'. In November 1953 it opened the restaurant 'Royal Nakasu Honten' (now Hananoki) in Higashi-Nakasu, Fukuoka, and established Yugen Kaisha Royal; Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio visited in February 1954. In May 1956 Royal Co., Ltd. was established in Higashi-Nakasu, Fukuoka, and in June 1956 the 'Royal Management Philosophy' was formulated. In 1956 the company developed frozen cake technology and began producing and selling frozen Christmas cakes. In November 1959 it opened 'Royal Shintenmachi' in Shintenmachi, Fukuoka, the origin of its family-type restaurant. In September 1962 it adopted a central kitchen system and began producing commercial frozen dishes; in April 1963 it built an ice cream factory in Shimowajiro, Fukuoka; and in September 1969 a new head office and factory (Royal Center) was completed in Naka, Fukuoka. In March 1970 it opened four outlets in the American Zone of Expo '70 in Osaka, recording the No. 1 sales among the venue's national restaurants. In December 1971 it opened the first suburban family restaurant Royal Host in Kurosaki, Kitakyushu. In 1973 it opened its first highway restaurant in the Mekari PA of the Kanmon Expressway, and the first Japanese Shakey's pizza restaurant opened in Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo (joining the Royal Group in 1989). In November 1975 Ogy Royal Co., Ltd. (now Royal Food Service Co., Ltd., a consolidated subsidiary) was established. In 1977 the first Tokyo-area Royal Host opened in Mitaka. In August 1978 the company listed on the Fukuoka Stock Exchange, and in 1978 it opened at New Tokyo International Airport (now Narita International Airport). In July 1979 it listed on the Second Section of the Osaka Securities Exchange. In August 1981 it listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange; in August 1982 it established a Tokyo head office (now Tokyo headquarters) in Sakurashinmachi, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo; and in June 1983 it was designated to the First Sections of the Tokyo and Osaka securities exchanges. In October 1983 it built the Tokyo food factory in Takasedo, Funabashi, Chiba, and in 1983 opened the first 'Cafe Croissant' in Shinjuku, Tokyo. In September 1987 International Air Catering Co., Ltd. (now Sojitz Royal Inflight Catering Co., Ltd.) was established, and in August 1988 Kansai Inflight Catering Co., Ltd. (now Sojitz Royal Inflight Catering Co., Ltd.) was established.
