Overview
Rowerowy Poznań, formally known as Sekcja Rowerzystów Miejskich (SRM), is a Polish cycling advocacy organization based in Poznań. Founded in 1993 as an initiative of students and young academics, it has operated for over three decades as the primary voice for residents who choose the bicycle as their everyday mode of transport. The organization's stated mission is to promote the bicycle as a means of urban communication and to work for the creation of cycling infrastructure both within and beyond the city, including urban and tourist cycle routes and bicycle parking facilities. SRM engages in a broad range of activities: it organizes cycling events, participates in meetings with city authorities and infrastructure planners as a member of the Rada Rowerowa (Cycling Council), cooperates with media, runs educational projects, monitors the city's cycling policy, and integrates the urban cycling community. It is a member of the Polish Cycling Federation (Polska Federacja Rowerowa) and is described as the only organization comprehensively addressing cycling issues in Poznań. The organization publishes a free bulletin titled "Ostatni Dzwonek" since 1993 and has produced reports on Poznań's cycling policy, including a social report in 2011 and a similar one in 2015. It has also carried out educational projects such as Miejska Akademia Rowerowa and Rowerem do Szkoły, training over 3,100 children between 2016 and 2018. Signature events include the Rowerowe Powitanie Wiosny (Cycling Spring Welcome) and the Tweed Ride, a stylish autumn cycling parade. The organization remains active, as evidenced by its ongoing campaigns, surveys, and events such as the XII Tweed Ride Poznań.
History
Rowerowy Poznań, formally Sekcja Rowerzystów Miejskich (SRM), was founded in 1993 in Poznań as an initiative of students and young academics. Among its co-founders were Adam Kompowski, Piotr Matczak, and Piotr Rachwalski. Initially, SRM operated as part of the Poznań Cyclists' Society (Poznańskie Towarzystwo Cyklistów), and after a year it joined the structures of the Wielkopolska District of the Polish Ecological Club (Polski Klub Ekologiczny). In 1997, it became an independent association with legal personality. Since 1993, the organization has published a free bulletin titled "Ostatni Dzwonek," which appears irregularly. In 2001, the association published the book "Rower na co dzień. Komunikacja, rekreacja, ochrona środowiska" (Bicycle Every Day: Communication, Recreation, Environmental Protection), based on materials from a Polish-Danish conference in Mikuszewo. SRM organized cycling trips for its members and supporters through the green areas of Poznań and its surroundings. In 1999–2000, SRM designed and marked cycling tourist routes in the Żerkowsko-Czeszewski Landscape Park. In December 2008, the association co-organized a large cycling ride through central Poznań during the United Nations Climate Change Conference. In 2011, SRM published the "Społeczny raport na temat polityki rowerowej Poznania" (Social Report on Poznań's Cycling Policy), which analyzed the city's cycling route network, its quality, user safety levels, and other important aspects of the city's cycling policy. A similar report was produced in 2015. In recent decades, SRM's activities have focused on contact with the Municipal Roads Authority (Zarząd Dróg Miejskich) and other city units to intervene in and repair Poznań's cycling infrastructure. Members have organized regular cycling patrols—rides involving activists and officials focusing on infrastructure potential in specific districts—as well as cycling rallies for supporters and members. Education is another important aspect: the organization publishes brochures and leaflets on road traffic rules, organizes training presentations, and participates in educational projects for children and school youth. In 2016–2018, SRM conducted two large projects funded by the city: Miejska Akademia Rowerowa (Urban Cycling Academy) for adults and Rowerem do Szkoły (By Bike to School) for children. Within the school-focused educational projects alone, over 3,100 children were trained between 2016 and 2018. The organization is a member of the Polish Cycling Federation (Polska Federacja Rowerowa) and is currently the only organization comprehensively addressing cycling issues in Poznań. It remains active, organizing events such as the Rowerowe Powitanie Wiosny (Cycling Spring Welcome), during which an unusual effigy symbolizing a chosen transport problem is drowned, and the autumn Tweed Ride, a stylish ride in vintage attire. As of the 2020s, it continues its advocacy, monitoring, and community-building work.
