Overview

Roverský Kmen (often shortened to Kmen) is a Czech scouting magazine published by Junák – český skaut, the national scouting organisation of the Czech Republic. It is one of several periodicals issued by Junák and is aimed specifically at rovers and rangers, the scouting age section for young people roughly 16 to 24 years old. The magazine was founded in 1997 on the initiative of Miloš Zapletal – Zet, a long-time scouting editor who felt that the movement paid too little attention to the rover and ranger age group. Since then it has appeared regularly, evolving from an initially black-and-white, illustration-led publication into a full-colour magazine with photography and a broader range of sections. The content of Roverský Kmen is organised into recurring rubrics. These include an editorial, a news overview, a thematic section, a rovering section focused on activities and personal development, a culture and travel section, a methodological section supporting education, and an invitations section for scouting events. The magazine also has explicit educational goals: strengthening a sense of belonging to Junák, showing that rovers are not marginal to the organisation, covering the international dimension of scouting, spreading the results of work on the new rover programme, reporting on other age categories, and motivating further scouting activity in the tribe, troop, centre, large events, courses, volunteering and abroad. It also aims to provide practical advice, support the element of service, offer reading for personal development, and give space to readers' own creative work, experiences and photographs. Over the years the magazine has been shaped by a succession of editors-in-chief, beginning with Miloš Zapletal – Zet (1997–1999) and continuing through Daniel Frič – Mimi, Lenka Tillichová, Eva Staněk, Julie Dominika Zemanová, Jana Karasová – Kami, Klára Procházková – Rajče, Vojtěch Kousal – Kousy and Kristýna Pechová – Týna, to Jakub Radan Dvořák – Dubínek from 2023. The publication has also adapted its sections over time: photographs and new rubrics appeared from the third volume, the Zprávy and Pozvánky sections were added in 2006, the magazine became fully colour from June 2007, and the literary supplement Semínka was discontinued around the same period for lack of content. The Čekatelská section, introduced by editor Karasová, provided educational content for the rover and ranger age group until it was merged away in 2023. The magazine continues to be published and maintains an online presence at kmen.skauting.cz, where current issues and articles are made available.

History

Roverský Kmen was founded in 1997 by Miloš Zapletal – Zet, who had previous experience with scouting magazines such as Skaut-Junák and Skauting, which served other age categories of Junák. Zapletal believed that the scouting movement was not paying enough attention to rovers and rangers, and he created Kmen to fill that gap. In its early years the magazine was published only in black and white and without photographs, relying instead on illustrations. A literary supplement called Semínka appeared in the first years, containing reflective texts and original creative work. As editor-in-chief, Zapletal himself wrote a large part of the magazine's content. From the third volume onward, photographs and new sections began to appear in Kmen, and the cover gained a colour background. In 2006 the sections Zprávy (News) and Pozvánky (Invitations) were introduced. From June 2007 the magazine was published in full colour. Around the same time the Semínka supplement ceased for lack of content. Editor-in-chief Karasová introduced the Čekatelská section, which offered educational content for people in the rover and ranger age group; this section was discontinued in 2023 when sections were merged. Editor-in-chief Procházková introduced the Zprávy ze světa (World News) section. When scouts celebrated anniversaries, the magazine usually responded with its own content; for example, during the 100th anniversary of world scouting a section called Stovka was published. The magazine has been led by a series of editors-in-chief: Miloš Zapletal – Zet (1997–1999), Daniel Frič – Mimi (1999–2003), Lenka Tillichová (2003–2006), Eva Staněk (2006–2008), Julie Dominika Zemanová (2008–2013), Jana Karasová – Kami (2013–2016), Klára Procházková – Rajče (2017–2020), Vojtěch Kousal – Kousy and Kristýna Pechová – Týna (2020–2023), and Jakub Radan Dvořák – Dubínek (from 2023). The magazine continues to be published by Junák – český skaut and maintains an online presence at kmen.skauting.cz, where current issues, articles and a podcast are made available.
