History
RotorWay began in 1961 when B. J. Schramm established RotorWay Aircraft in Arizona. Schramm's first prototype, the Javelin, used a 40-horsepower motorcycle engine and demonstrated the feasibility of a small, owner-built helicopter. The production-oriented Scorpion followed in 1967. It was marketed as a sport aircraft rather than a commercial helicopter and became one of the first kit helicopters to achieve practical flight use in the recreational market. The Scorpion program evolved through several revisions. A 1971 update introduced aluminum rotor blades, an OMC two-stroke engine and a heavier drive system. The Scorpion II, also introduced in 1971, used a more powerful OMC engine and could carry two lightweight occupants. In 1974 RotorWay abandoned the two-stroke powerplant approach and developed the RW133, its own four-stroke engine. The Scorpion II equipped with this engine was renamed the Scorpion 133. RotorWay entered a more ambitious phase in the 1980s. The RW145 engine and Exec helicopter were intended to give the company's aircraft a more finished appearance, replacing the exposed structure associated with many amateur-built helicopters with a more enclosed design. RotorWay also introduced asymmetrical rotor blades in 1982. The Exec program encountered technical and financial obstacles, and only a small number were sold before the company was acquired by former customer John Netherwood. The Exec was then discontinued in its initial form. In 1990 the company reorganized and changed its name to RotorWay International. The Exec line returned in the early 1990s with the Exec 90, powered by the RI 162 engine. The Exec 162F followed in 1994 and incorporated further refinements to the FADEC engine-control and ACIS systems. RotorWay's model strategy continued to combine proprietary engineering with kit-based customer completion, with factory work increasingly covering specialized processes such as welding. The company announced the A600 Talon in 2007. The aircraft incorporated an updated FADEC system, an all-glass cockpit, a cog-belt primary drive and larger landing gear. By 2017 RotorWay's marketing generally referred to the aircraft as the A600 rather than the A600 Talon. In 2009 RotorWay purchased PMC Machining and Manufacturing, a Phoenix-based helicopter-parts producer. RotorWay linked the acquisition to manufacturing expansion and to a plan for a two-seat turbine helicopter using the Rolls-Royce RR300 engine, but the proposed certified turbine project did not become an established RotorWay production model. RotorWay showed the RW7 at AirVenture in 2015. The model was later removed from the company's website, and available reference material does not establish that it entered series production. The A600 remained the principal later RotorWay model identified in public descriptions. In 2021 Rotor X Aircraft Manufacturing purchased RotorWay's factory location, designs and assets. RotorWay ceased business, while Rotor X stated that it intended to continue supplying kits and parts for existing RotorWay designs. Reports in 2023 and 2024 described complaints from some customers alleging incomplete or undelivered kits and parts and identified contract-related litigation involving Rotor X. Rotor X also filed for Chapter 11 protection in Arizona in October 2023; the case was dismissed later that month and closed in November. In January 2024 the successor company announced a management transition and said it intended to resume operations. These events belong primarily to Rotor X's post-acquisition history and do not indicate that RotorWay itself resumed business.
