Overview
Rotondohütte is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), owned and operated by the club's Sektion Lägern (Aargau). It stands at 2,571 metres above sea level south of Realp in the canton of Uri, Switzerland, in the western Gotthard group of the Uri Alps. The hut is a well-known base for ski touring in winter and for alpine climbing, ice climbing and mountain hiking in summer. Its setting, once surrounded by the Witenwasserengletscher, has become increasingly snow-reliable and, as the glacier has retreated, also a popular summer destination. The hut was built after the Korporation Urseren granted the Sektion Lägern a 500-square-metre building plot with water rights at the Witenwasserengletscher in 1907. The prefabricated wooden structure was transported by rail to Göschenen and then carried by porters, horses and mules to the site, and it was inaugurated in September 1909. The original two-storey shingled wooden building contained a living room, kitchen and sleeping quarters upstairs. In 1930 the hut was clad in local natural stone to make it windproof and a small annex was added on the south side. A further conversion and extension to 76 sleeping places followed in 1966. The hut was renovated and extended in 1993, and an east annex was realised in 2010. Today Rotondohütte is a staffed SAC hut with a hut team, offering sleeping places, showers, food and drinks, and a winter room. It is reached from Realp in about 3½ hours, in winter through the Witenwasserental and Hinterer Schweig in 3½ to 4 hours, from the Gotthard Pass in about 5 to 6 hours, from the Furka Pass in about 6 hours, and from Villa Bedretto over the Passo di Cavanna in 5 to 5½ hours. Popular summit destinations include the Gross Leckihorn over the Leckipass (2,891 m), the Gerenhorn, the Pizzo Pesciora, the Witenwasserenstock east (3,025 m) and west (3,082 m) summits, and the Gross Muttenhorn toward the Furka Pass. The hut is a commercial hospitality and tourism offering within the SAC network, marketed through its own website with information on arrival, weather, activities, prices, jobs and availability. It also appears in regional tourism promotion, including a German-market advertising video with Andermatt and Switzerland Tourism. The Rotondohütte brand is closely tied to the history of alpine skiing and ski touring in the Gotthard region and to the ongoing transformation of the glacier landscape.
History
The Rotondohütte owes its existence to the early popularity of skiing in the Gotthard region. In 1907 the Korporation Urseren granted the Sektion Lägern (Aargau) of the Swiss Alpine Club a 500-square-metre building plot with water rights at the Witenwasserengletscher. The hut was built as a prefabricated wooden construction, transported by rail to Göschenen and from there carried by porters, horses and mules up to the building site. It was inaugurated in September 1909. The original rectangular, shingled wooden building had two storeys: a living room and kitchen on the ground floor and a sleeping room on the upper floor. Its location in a glacier area made it particularly suitable for the then-fashionable sport of skiing. In 1930 the hut was clad with natural stones from the surrounding area to make it windproof, and a small annex was added on the south side. A further conversion and extension increased capacity to 76 sleeping places in 1966. The hut was renovated and extended in 1993, and an east annex was realised in 2010. Over more than a century the hut has been managed by a succession of hut wardens and hut chiefs, a history documented by the section. A major environmental change has shaped the hut's recent history: the retreat of the glacier. The Rotondohütte is no longer surrounded by glacier ice, but its location remains relatively snow-reliable. About 110 years after its opening, and because of the glacier shrinkage, the area has increasingly developed into a popular summer destination. The connection of the Witenwasserental to the Uri hiking network in 2020 opened up new summer hiking objectives in a barren, rough and rugged landscape. The section has also documented the change of the glacial lakes between 2018 and 2022. The hut remains an active SAC facility and a marketed destination, including a German-market advertising video produced with Andermatt and Switzerland Tourism.
