Overview
The Rosenlauibiwak is a small, unstaffed mountain bivouac hut in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, owned and operated by the Oberaargau section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It sits at 2,330 metres above sea level east of the Rosenlaui Glacier, on the summer approach to the larger Dossenhütte, pressed against the rock at the edge of a scree slope. Built in 1973 as a rust-red metal shelter, it serves primarily as a winter alternative to the Dossenhütte for ski tourers heading into the Wetterhorn and Rosenhorn area. The hut is open only during the spring ski touring season and when the Dossenhütte is closed; in summer it is shut. It offers ten sleeping places with woollen blankets, but no lighting, no heating, and no cooking facilities. Guests must bring their own stove and gas cartridges, though crockery and cutlery are provided in a table drawer. Reservations are mandatory. The normal approach from Rosenlaui takes about three hours, climbing 980 metres at difficulty T4, and the hut is a well-known base for ski ascents of the Rosenhorn (3,688 m) and Wetterhorn (3,690 m). As a facility of the SAC Oberaargau section, it is part of a network of huts that also includes the Dossenhütte and the Rothornhütte above Zermatt.
History
The Rosenlauibiwak was built in 1973 by the Oberaargau section of the Swiss Alpine Club as a rust-red metal bivouac. It was intended to serve ski tourers on their way into the Wetterhorn and Rosenhorn area, providing a winter alternative to the Dossenhütte, which is not accessible or open in the same way during the ski touring season. The hut has remained a simple, unstaffed shelter since its construction, with no lighting, no stove, and no cooking facilities. It has eleven mattresses, woollen blankets, and crockery. Over the decades it has become a recognised base for spring ski mountaineering in the Bernese Alps, and it is listed among the huts of the SAC Oberaargau section alongside the Dossenhütte and the Rothornhütte. The section itself is one of 110 sections of the Swiss Alpine Club and covers the area from Wangen an der Aare through Herzogenbuchsee and Langenthal to Balsthal, with over 1,100 members.
