Overview

ROSEN Group is an industrial technology company with German origins and headquarters in Stans, Switzerland. It researches, designs, manufactures, operates, and evaluates inspection systems for pipelines and other technically complex infrastructure. Its principal customer base has historically been the oil and gas industry, although the group also serves offshore facilities, mining operations, industrial plants, tank farms, pressure vessels, refineries, and infrastructure connected with the energy transition. The company traces its origins to the engineering work of Hermann Rosen. After studying measurement and control technology, Rosen established an engineering business in Lingen, Germany, during the mid-1970s. Its early activities included measurement technology for agriculture and other applications. The ROSEN Group was formally established in 1981 and subsequently concentrated increasingly on pipeline-related equipment and services for oil and gas operators. In 1988, the business moved to an industrial park in Lingen, which remained an important operating and manufacturing location even after the corporate headquarters moved abroad. During the 1990s, ROSEN began internationalizing through offices in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Malaysia, and Australia. Its international network expanded further in the following decade to include locations in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Russia, Brazil, and Colombia. In 2000, the group moved its headquarters from Lingen to Stans in Switzerland while continuing to maintain substantial activities in Germany. The group is described as having more than 40 locations and operating in over 110 countries. ROSEN's core business uses instrumented inspection devices, commonly known in the pipeline industry as pigs, to collect information about the condition of pipelines and related assets. The company develops and manufactures much of this equipment internally and has described its vertical manufacturing integration as being approximately 85% to 90%. Inspection data is processed and analyzed to identify defects, degradation, weak points, and potentially hazardous areas. The resulting information supports maintenance, repair, integrity-management, and long-term investment decisions. The group organizes its activities around several business areas. Oil and Gas provides inspection services for pipelines and other industrial systems. Future Fuel addresses infrastructure for hydrogen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, and other renewable or low-carbon gases, including the possible repurposing of existing assets. Mining focuses on slurry pipelines and facilities exposed to the operating conditions of mining. Offshore covers offshore installations, pipelines, distributors, and processing systems. ROSEN has also invested in technical research, education, and regional social infrastructure. It has supported physics education at the University of Osnabrück since 1995, participated in scholarship programs, and established bilingual childcare, primary-school, and youth-support initiatives in Lingen. Its technology has received industry recognition, including awards for the RoMat PGS yield-strength measurement service and EMAT pipeline inspection technology. In November 2023, Partners Group acquired a majority stake in the formerly family-owned business for an undisclosed amount. The transaction was accompanied by a reorganization of the group and the separation of so-called new ventures from the main ROSEN business. Those activities were combined into the independent Rosenxt company, while Hermann Rosen retained a minority interest. Public reference material identifies different chief executives in connection with the post-transaction period, so the precise current executive arrangement requires verification.

History

ROSEN Group developed from the engineering activities of Hermann Rosen, a measurement and control technology specialist who established an engineering company in Lingen, Germany, in the mid-1970s. The early business worked on measurement-related equipment and services, including applications in agriculture. The company's later identity was shaped by its move into pipeline technology and services for oil and gas operators. The ROSEN Group foundation is dated to 1981. The company moved to an industrial park in Lingen in 1988. From there, it expanded beyond Germany during the 1990s, establishing offices in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Malaysia, and Australia. This international growth reflected the geographically distributed nature of pipeline infrastructure and the need for inspection providers to support operators near their assets. In 2000, ROSEN moved its corporate headquarters from Lingen to Stans, Switzerland. The relocation did not end the importance of Lingen, which continued to host significant operations. In 2006, the group created a dedicated plastics-production operation there. The company opened an innovation center in Lingen in September 2012, with the facility inaugurated by Lower Saxony Minister-President David McAllister. A logistics center using a Kanban-based system followed in 2013. The group's international network continued to develop during the 2000s and 2010s, with additional locations in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Russia, Brazil, and Colombia. Its technical work expanded beyond conventional pipeline inspection to include inspection of tank farms, pressure vessels, refineries, spiral pipes, offshore installations, mining slurry pipelines, and other complex industrial systems. A notable operational milestone occurred in October 2013, when ROSEN performed a continuous 1,224-kilometre inspection run in the Nord Stream pipeline. The company also developed specialized inspection and measurement technologies. Its RoMat PGS service was recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2015 for enabling measurement of the yield strength of carbon-steel line pipe. In 2017, the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association recognized ROSEN's EMAT inspection service as an industry innovation. Education and regional community programs became another part of the company's activities. ROSEN has supported the University of Osnabrück's physics advancement award since 1995 and has participated in the Emsland Scholarship and Germany's national scholarship program. In Lingen, it established the bilingual ROKIDS daycare in 2007, followed by the ROBIGS bilingual primary school in 2015 and the ROYOUTH extracurricular program in 2016. These initiatives were later organized under a separate subsidiary. Until 2023, Hermann Rosen led the corporate group for most of its history, apart from Friedrich Hecker's chief-executive tenure from 2013 to 2014. In November 2023, Partners Group acquired a majority stake in ROSEN for an undisclosed price. The transaction ended the company's status as a wholly family-owned business, although Hermann Rosen retained a minority holding. The post-acquisition structure separated new ventures and development projects from the core ROSEN business and placed them in the independent Rosenxt company. Reference material names Erik Cornelissen as the post-transaction chief executive and elsewhere identifies Andreas Opfermann as group CEO; this discrepancy should be resolved against current company records.
