Overview
Rorbua is a pub located in Tromsø, Norway. It first opened in 1972 in the wooden building that had previously housed the reception of the Central Hotel. After that building was demolished in April 1973, the pub reopened in June 1974 in the basement of the SAS hotel, with 80 seats and a rough half-timbered style. By 1984 it was considered one of the most visited pubs in Norway. From 1987 to 2003, the NRK program "Du skal høre mye" was recorded at Rorbua, bringing the pub into Norwegian living rooms. In 2011, Rorbua and the adjacent Yonas pizzeria moved to the wharves: Rorbua to Holmboebrygga and Yonas next to it in the Nordkalottens hus. The new premises doubled the public area, spanned two floors, and allowed for outdoor seating in front and in the backyard, with plans for outdoor concerts. Some of the old interior was brought to the new location. The old premises in the SAS hotel were later occupied by the post office in 2012, which closed in 2022, and then by the travel company Best Arctic.
History
Rorbua pub opened in 1972 in the wooden building that had previously served as the reception of the Central Hotel in Tromsø. On 1 June 1971, SAS Catering had taken over the operation of the Central Hotel and renamed it SAS Royal Hotel. The wooden building was demolished in April 1973, and the hotel operated with reduced capacity until the third building stage was taken into use on 2 June 1974. In June 1974, Rorbua pub reopened in the basement of the SAS hotel. The pub had 80 seats, was furnished in a rough half-timbered style, and was located next to the "Jonas" pizza cellar and disco. In 1984, the pub was considered one of the most visited pubs in Norway. From 1987 to 2003, the NRK program "Du skal høre mye" was recorded at Rorbua, bringing the pub directly into Norwegian living rooms. In 2011, both Rorbua and Yonas pizzeria were moved to the wharves. Rorbua was moved to Holmboebrygga and Yonas next to it in the Nordkalottens hus. The new premises doubled the public area, were over two floors, and provided opportunities for outdoor seating in front and in the backyard. Outdoor concerts were also planned. Some of the furnishings from the old Rorbua were brought to the new premises. In 2012, the post office moved into the old premises of Rorbua pub in the SAS hotel. The post office was the city's last, and it was closed in 2022. After the post office moved out, the travel company Best Arctic moved into the premises.
