Overview
Rookie Records is a German independent record label and music publisher focused on punk rock, post-punk and indie music. It was founded in 1996 by Jürgen Schattner, initially as a solution to release an album by his own band Attention!Rookies after no other label would take it on. What began as a makeshift arrangement quickly became a respected name within punk and hardcore circles. The label is based in Hamburg and operates as a private, owner-run business. Over the years Rookie Records has released records by a wide range of German and international punk, hardcore and indie acts, including Kick Joneses, Spermbirds, Turbostaat (in cooperation with Schiffen), Terrorgruppe, The Jones, Stokoe (featuring Dickie Hammond of Leatherface), Die Aeronauten, Pascow, Love A, Bambix, Loaded, The Stanfields and Puta Madre Brothers. From 1999 to 2005 Schattner ran the label as a side project alongside his main job at the mailorder company Flight13 Records in Freiburg. In cooperation with Boss Tuneage (UK), Rookie Records issued German reissues of well-known hardcore and punk bands such as Heresy, Ripcord, Dan and Sofahead. In 2008 Schattner expanded into music publishing, founding Edition Rookie Publishing together with Gerhard Zimmermann and Mute Music Promotion (mmp), which since then has handled marketing for the label's bands. Schattner ran Rookie Records from Cologne between 2006 and summer 2015, after which he moved to Hamburg, where he continues to run the label, publishing arm and promotion activities. The label's current roster includes 100blumen, A Deer A Horse, A Mess, Bar, Big John Bates, Bittter, Bitume, Blackup, Bubonix, Club Of Problems, Die Expressionisten, Die Radierer, Ernte 77, The Extras, fluppe, Frau Doktor, Fucking Angry, Hi Mum, Illegale Farben, The Jackson Pollock, Joe Leila, Karoshi, Keele, Kick Joneses, KMPFSPRT, Leto, Like A Motorcycle, Loaded, Love A, Matches, Melonball, Monkeeman, Nasty Neighbours, Ninamarie, Not Scientists, Pales, Pascow, Puerto Hurraco Sisters, Punk Life Balance, Rong Kong Koma, SAFI, Schnuppe, The Schogettes, Schreng Schreng & La La, Sedlmeir, Shirley Holmes, Sick Hyenas, Spermbirds, Statues On Fire, Steakknife, Surreal Fatal, Team Tyson, Volores, Wick Bambix, Zach Mathieu and Zoon Phonanta. History
Rookie Records was founded in 1996 by Jürgen Schattner. The label came into being because no one wanted to release the album by Attention!Rookies, Schattner's band at the time, so he founded his own label to put it out. What started as a makeshift solution quickly became an insider tip among friends and acquaintances. Releases followed from acts including the Walter Elf successor band Kick Joneses, Spermbirds, Turbostaat (in cooperation with Schiffen), Terrorgruppe, The Jones and Stokoe (featuring Dickie Hammond of Leatherface). From 1999 to 2005 Schattner ran the label as a side project alongside his main job at the mailorder company Flight13 Records in Freiburg. In cooperation with Boss Tuneage (UK), Rookie Records released German reissues of well-known hardcore and punk bands such as Heresy, Ripcord, Dan and Sofahead. In 2008 Schattner expanded his activities toward music publishing, founding Edition Rookie Publishing together with Gerhard Zimmermann and Mute Music Promotion (mmp), which since then has handled marketing for the label's bands. By this time the roster also included bands such as Die Aeronauten, Pascow, Love A, Bambix, Loaded, The Stanfields and Puta Madre Brothers. Schattner ran Rookie Records from Cologne between 2006 and summer 2015. Since then he has lived in Hamburg, where he continues to run the label, the publishing arm and promotion activities. The label remains active, releasing new albums and reissues and maintaining a shop, mastering service and live archive.
