Overview

The Rojacherhütte (also written Rojacher Hütte) is a Category I mountain shelter owned and operated by the Rauris section of the Austrian Alpine Club (Österreichischer Alpenverein, ÖAV). It stands at 2,718 metres above sea level in the Goldberggruppe of the Austrian Alps, roughly one kilometre south-east of the summit of the Hoher Sonnblick (3,105 m) and the Zittelhaus. The hut is a key waypoint on long-distance routes such as the Zentralalpenweg and the Tauernhöhenweg, and it serves as a base for summit excursions to the Hoher Sonnblick and the Alteck. The shelter is named after Ignaz Rojacher (1844–1891), a Rauris mining entrepreneur and later mine owner. It was built in 1898–1899 by Rojacher's friend Wilhelm Ritter von Arlt, a Bohemian agricultural expert, as a memorial to Rojacher. In 1925 the Halle section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV) acquired both the Rojacherhütte and the Zittelhaus. An expansion toward the rock face began in 1992 and was completed with the inauguration on 16 July 1994. Since 1984 the Rauris section of the ÖAV has been the owner of the hut. Access is typically by car via Rauris to the Bodenhaus, then along a toll road to the Lenzanger car park; in summer a Postbus (line 640) runs from Zell am See via Taxenbach, Rauris and Bucheben to Kolm-Saigurn. The ascent on foot from the Lenzanger car park passes the Naturfreundehaus Kolm-Saigurn (1,598 m) and the Naturfreundehaus Neubau (2,175 m) and takes about three hours. The hut is a staging point for transitions to the Zittelhaus (1½ hours), the Duisburger Hütte (3 hours), the Niedersachsenhaus (3 hours) and the Naturfreundehaus Neubau (1¼ hours). As a Category I shelter, the Rojacherhütte offers simple mountain accommodation and food service for hikers and climbers. Its commercial identity is tied to alpine tourism and mountaineering services rather than to a conventional consumer product line. The hut is listed in standard alpine guidebooks and on the Alpenvereinskarte sheet 42 (Sonnblick, 1:25,000).

History

The Rojacherhütte is named after Ignaz Rojacher (1844–1891), a Rauris mining entrepreneur (Gewerke) and later mine owner. The hut was built in 1898–1899 by Rojacher's friend Wilhelm Ritter von Arlt, a Bohemian agricultural expert, in Rojacher's honour. In 1925 the Halle section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (Deutscher und Österreichischer Alpenverein, DuOeAV) acquired the Rojacherhütte together with the Zittelhaus. Since 1984 the Rauris section of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) has been the owner of the hut. An expansion toward the rock face began in 1992 and was completed with the inauguration on 16 July 1994. The hut is a Category I shelter of the ÖAV Rauris section and lies in the Goldberggruppe at 2,718 m above sea level, about one kilometre as the crow flies south-east of the summit of the Hoher Sonnblick (3,105 m) and the Zittelhaus. It is an important staging point for hikers on the Zentralalpenweg, a 1,200 km Austrian long-distance trail from Hainburg to Feldkirch, and on the Tauernhöhenweg. Transitions to neighbouring huts include the Zittelhaus (1½ hours), the Duisburger Hütte (3 hours), the Niedersachsenhaus (3 hours) and the Naturfreundehaus Neubau (1¼ hours). Summit tours from the hut include the Hoher Sonnblick (3,105 m) in 1 to 1½ hours via the marked normal route from the east, and the Alteck (2,942 m) in 2 to 2½ hours. Access by car is via Rauris to the Bodenhaus, then along a toll road to the Lenzanger car park; in summer a Postbus (line 640) runs from Zell am See via Taxenbach, Rauris and Bucheben to Kolm-Saigurn. The approach on foot from the Lenzanger car park passes the Naturfreundehaus Kolm-Saigurn (1,598 m) and the Naturfreundehaus Neubau (2,175 m) and takes about three hours. The hut is documented in alpine literature such as the Alpenvereinsführer Ankogel- und Goldberggruppe by Liselotte Buchenauer and Peter Holl (1986) and on Alpenvereinskarte sheet 42 Sonnblick (1:25,000).
