Roche Diagnostics is the diagnostics division and operating brand of the Swiss healthcare group F. Hoffmann-La Roche. It develops, manufactures and commercializes in vitro diagnostic systems, reagents, software and related services for clinical laboratories, hospitals, physicians, researchers and patients. Its activities span routine laboratory testing, molecular diagnostics, tissue diagnostics, diabetes management, point-of-care testing and research technologies. The cobas 6800 and cobas 8800 systems became especially visible during the COVID-19 pandemic because they could process large volumes of molecular tests. Roche received United States Food and Drug Administration authorization in 2020 for a high-throughput SARS-CoV-2 test used on these platforms. Roche Diagnostics emerged as a distinct Roche business following the 1998 acquisition of Corange Ltd, the holding company of Boehringer Mannheim. The COVID-19 pandemic brought the division broad public attention. In 2020, Roche obtained United States authorization for a high-volume SARS-CoV-2 molecular test for use with the cobas 6800 and cobas 8800 platforms. The systems were described as capable of processing approximately 1,400 to 8,800 samples over a 24-hour period, depending on configuration and workflow. This episode illustrated the strategic importance of Roche's installed laboratory base and its ability to deploy assays through existing instruments. Roche continued to expand molecular diagnostics after the pandemic. Its 2021 agreement to acquire GenMark Diagnostics added multiplex molecular testing technology, while the acquisition of TIB Molbiol later that year supported assay development and infectious-disease diagnostics. The division also operates in tissue diagnostics through Ventana, in diabetes management through glucose-monitoring products and digital services, and in research-use technologies serving academic and industrial laboratories.
