Overview

The Italian Political Science Review / Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering political science. It was founded in 1971 by the prominent political scientist Giovanni Sartori, promoted by the Centro studi di politica comparata (Centre for the Study of Comparative Politics) in Florence, and published by the Italian publisher Il Mulino under the name Rivista italiana di scienza politica from 1971 to 2014. In 2015 the journal moved to Cambridge University Press and adopted its current English title, Italian Political Science Review / Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica, and began publishing entirely in English. The journal's scope spans the main areas of political science, including comparative politics, political behaviour, public policy analysis, international relations, and political economy. All contributions undergo anonymous peer review before publication. Ownership of the journal was transferred in 2004 to the Società italiana di scienza politica (Italian Political Science Association), which since then appoints its editor. Sartori served as the journal's first editor, assisted by Gianfranco Pasquino as managing editor. Over the years Sartori was joined by co-editors including Leonardo Morlino, Maurizio Cotta, Maurizio Ferrera, and Pasquino himself. Following the 2004 transfer of ownership, the journal has been led by Sergio Fabbrini (2004–2009), Luca Verzichelli (2010–2014), Fabio Franchino and Amie Kreppel (2015–2018), Filippo Tronconi and Martin Bull (2019–2022), and Lorenzo De Sio and Sylvia Kritzinger (2023–). Today the journal is hosted on Cambridge Core, the academic platform of Cambridge University Press & Assessment, which carries over 1.8 million journal articles and more than 46,000 books. From 5 August 2025, all articles accepted for publication in the journal are open access, published under a Creative Commons licence and freely available to read online, with costs covered through publisher–institution agreements, article processing charges for those with third-party funding, or waivers.
