Overview
The Rivista Geografica Italiana is a quarterly academic journal of geography, founded in Florence in 1893 and published by the Società di Studi Geografici. It is the official organ of that society and has long been recognized as a principal venue for geographical research in Italy. The journal publishes articles and commentaries in Italian, English, French, and Castilian, and is structured into two main sections: Articoli (Articles), which includes research articles and review articles subject to double-blind peer review, and Opinioni e dibattiti (Opinions and Debates), which hosts non-peer-reviewed contributions assessed by the editorial committee. It appears four times a year, in March, June, September, and December. Since 2013 it has been indexed in Elsevier's Scopus, and it is classified as a Class A journal in Geography by ANVUR, the Italian national agency for the evaluation of universities and research institutes. It is also the only Italian journal of human geography included in the list of scientific journals adopted by CNRS in France. The journal has received financial support from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). Over its long history it has published numerous special issues, monographic numbers, and conference proceedings, and has broadened its thematic scope from early colonial concerns to historical geography, the history of geography, and problems of geographical teaching.
History
The Rivista Geografica Italiana was founded in Florence in 1893. It soon became the organ of the Società di Studi Geografici e Coloniali, which was established in Florence in 1895. In its early period the journal devoted considerable space to colonial issues, reflecting the concerns of the time. Over the decades it broadened its geographical interests to include historical geography, the history of geography, and problems of geographical teaching, growing into a volume that often exceeded 600 pages per year. At the end of the 1940s it was recognized as the sole periodical representative of the Comitato per la Geografia e Geologia e Mineralogia of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR). Throughout its long activity the journal has published numerous special publications, including monographic issues and conference proceedings. In 2007 it adopted a peer-review procedure modeled on ISI guidelines to ensure high quality. In 2013 it was accepted into Elsevier's Scopus repertory. It is classified as a Class A journal in Geography by ANVUR and is the only Italian human geography journal included in the CNRS list of scientific journals in France. The journal continues to be published quarterly, in March, June, September, and December, and remains the official organ of the Società di Studi Geografici, with financial support from the CNR.
