Overview

Rifugio Vulpot is an alpine hut (rifugio) in the Piedmont region of Italy, situated near Lago di Malciaussia in the upper Valle di Viù. The building that houses the refuge was originally constructed in the 1930s as a barracks for the Guardia alla Frontiera stationed at Malciaussia. It was later entrusted to the alpine guide Domenico Ferro, known as Bertu Vulpot, whose family managed the refuge until 2003. After a year of closure, management passed in 2005 to the Furlan family, the current operators. The refuge serves as a base for hikers and mountaineers exploring the surrounding valleys and peaks. In summer, it is reachable by car via the SP 32 road from Usseglio to Lago di Malciaussia, a narrow paved route without guardrails, or on foot via a trail from the Trucco hamlet of Mompantero over the Colle della Croce di Ferro (2,558 m). In winter, access is possible from Margone along the summer route only when snow is well consolidated, due to avalanche danger in the Vallone d'Arnas. From the refuge, several excursions and ascents depart, including Lago Nero (2,007 m), Colle della Croce di Ferro (2,558 m), Laghi dell'Autaret (2,970 m), Punta Sulè (3,384 m), and Rocciamelone (3,538 m). The refuge is listed in the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) network and appears in publications such as "Rifugi e bivacchi in Valli di Lanzo" (2006).

History

The building that now houses Rifugio Vulpot was constructed in the 1930s as a barracks for the Guardia alla Frontiera (Frontier Guard) stationed at Malciaussia, in the last hamlet of the Valle di Viù. At some point it was converted into an alpine refuge and entrusted to the alpine guide Domenico Ferro, nicknamed Bertu Vulpot, after whom the refuge is named. The Ferro family managed the refuge until 2003. Following a year of closure, in 2005 management was taken over by the Furlan family, who continue to operate it. The refuge is part of the network of huts affiliated with the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), specifically the intersezionale Canavese-Valli di Lanzo. It is documented in the 2006 publication "Rifugi e bivacchi in Valli di Lanzo - Valli Tesso e Malone - Valli Ceronda e Casternone" by ATL Lanzo and CAI Lanzo.
