Overview
Rifugio Vitale Giacoletti is a mountain hut (rifugio) in the Cottian Alps of the Piedmont region, northern Italy. It sits at 2,741 metres above sea level in the municipality of Crissolo, in the upper Po Valley (Valle Po), below the north flank of Monviso near the Colle del Losas. The hut belongs to the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) and is operated seasonally, typically from mid-June to mid-September, with other periods available on request. It is a key stop on the Giro del Monviso, a popular multi-day trek around the mountain, and is used as a base for climbing and hiking in the area. The building was originally constructed in 1939 as a military barracks and was used for military purposes until 1943. From 1952 it was used as a mountain hut under the name Rifugio del Losas by the Barge section of the CAI. After a renovation in 1961 it was renamed in honour of Vitale Giacoletti (1923–1955), the founder of the CAI Barge section. The hut has been expanded and modernised several times, most recently in 1971. Today the rifugio is run by keeper Andrea, an alpine guide since 1986 who has managed the Giacoletti for about twenty years, together with his family. The hut offers typical mountain hospitality, food and accommodation, and serves as a starting point for excursions and climbs. It is open only in the summer season, reflecting the high-altitude location and the traditional rhythm of alpine hut life.
