Overview

Rifugio Segantini, officially Rifugio Val d'Amola "Giovanni Segantini", is a mountain hut located at 2,373 metres in the Val d'Amola, a side valley of Val Nambrone in the Trentino region of Italy. It is owned and operated by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), the Trentino mountaineering association. The hut sits at the foot of Cima Presanella, the highest peak entirely in Trentino, and offers panoramic views of the Brenta Dolomites. It serves as a base for climbers and hikers, with access to numerous trails and climbing routes, including the Cornisello Lakes and the Presanella summit. The original hut was opened in 1901 as the third hut built by SAT and was named in honour of the Trentino painter Giovanni Segantini. After being looted during World War I and restored, it served until the 1970s. A new, larger hut was built next to the old one and opened in 1977. The hut offers 48 beds and a winter room with 8 beds, and is typically open from mid-June to mid-September and during the winter season. The cuisine features traditional Trentino dishes made with fresh local ingredients. The hut also hosts events such as the Amola Run, organised with local partners.

History

The Rifugio Segantini was the third mountain hut built by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT) and was opened in 1901. It was named in honour of the Trentino painter Giovanni Segantini, who had died a few years earlier. The original cube-shaped hut was looted during World War I, first by soldiers and then by the local population, but as it was not immediately near the front, it was not of further military interest. After the war, the hut was restored by SAT and continued to serve as a refuge until the 1970s. In the late 1960s, the nearby Lago di Cornisello in Val Nambrone was used for hydroelectric power generation, and an access road was built by Enel, significantly shortening the walking time to the hut. As a result, SAT decided to build a new and larger hut next to the old building. The new Rifugio was opened in 1977. In the early 1990s, both the old and new huts were renovated. Today, the hut is typically open from mid-June to mid-September and during the winter season, offering 48 beds and a winter room with 8 beds. It is a starting point for the ascent of Cima Presanella and other peaks in the Adamello-Presanella group.
