Overview

Rifugio Rosalba is a historic alpine mountain hut located at 1,730 metres above sea level at the base of the Segantini ridge on the Grigna Meridionale (known as the Grignetta), between the Monastero and Scarettone valleys in the Prealpi Orobie of Italy. It is owned and managed by the Milan section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI Milano). The hut was conceived in the early 1900s as a resting point for climbers descending from the Segantini ridge. Giovanni Alfieri designed a small all-wood structure, built it in his villa garden, then had it dismantled, carried up by shoulder, and reassembled on the Pertusio hill. It was inaugurated on 15 July 1906 and named after Rosalba, the daughter of the donor. Over the decades the hut underwent several expansions and improvements: in 1921 it received an outer sheathing of sheet metal and zinc; in 1955 the current masonry structure was built; and in 1983 the old wooden construction was dismantled. In 1923, to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the CAI Milano section, a connecting trail between Rifugio Rosalba and Rifugio Carlo Porta at Piani Resinelli was inaugurated. The hut serves as a base for numerous alpine climbs on the characteristic rock towers of the Grignetta, including Zucco Pertusio, Zucco Giardino, Piramide Casati, Torrione Palma, Torre Cecilia, Torrione del Cinquantenario, Torrione Costanza, Torrione Mongolfiera, Guglia Angelina, Ago Teresita, and the Cuspidi di val Tesa. It can also be reached from Piani Resinelli via trails no. 8 (Direttissima) and no. 9 (delle Foppe), and from Mandello del Lario via trails no. 12, 13, 13B, and 14. All trails are demanding and require extreme caution. The hut is a popular destination for its position in the heart of the Grignetta's 'stone garden'. Among its guests was the writer Dino Buzzati, who stayed there for two nights on 22 October 1923. The hut is listed on the official website of CAI Milano.

History

The need for a shelter at the foot of the Segantini ridge arose in the early 1900s, to provide a resting point during the descent. Giovanni Alfieri designed a small structure entirely in wood and built it in the garden of his villa. It was then dismantled, carried up by shoulder, and reassembled on the Pertusio hill. It was inaugurated on 15 July 1906 and owes its name to Rosalba, the daughter of the donor. The hut saw various expansion and improvement works: in 1921 the first works led to an outer sheathing of sheet metal and zinc; in 1955 the current masonry structure was built; and in 1983 the old construction was dismantled. In 1923, on the occasion of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the CAI Milano section, the connecting trail between Rifugio Rosalba and Rifugio Carlo Porta at Piani Resinelli was inaugurated. The hut has always been a very popular destination for its position in the heart of the Grignetta's stone garden. Among the guests of the hut, the presence of the writer Dino Buzzati is remembered, on 22 October 1923, who spent two nights there like those one dreams of when far from the mountains.
