Overview

Rifugio Pradidali (also known as Pradidalihütte) is an alpine mountain hut (rifugio) in the Italian province of Trentino, situated in the Pale di San Martino group within the Dolomites. It stands at an elevation of 2,278 metres above sea level in the municipality of Primiero San Martino di Castrozza. The hut is operated by the Treviso section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), Italy's national alpine club, and is typically staffed continuously from mid-June to the end of September. It offers 64 sleeping places for mountaineers. The name of the hut is thought to derive from the Italian phrase 'prati gialli' (yellow meadows), referring to the meadows encountered on the ascent through the Val Pradidali, which are especially notable in late spring when the alpine poppy blooms. The rifugio is located in the upper Val Pradidali, a side valley branching off from the Val Canali near Cant de Gal in the southern Pale di San Martino. It serves as a starting point for numerous ascents, including the Cima Canali and the Sass Maor, as well as several via ferrata routes such as the Ferrata del Porton/Velo and the Ferrata Nico Gusella. The Dolomites High Route No. 2 (from Brixen to Feltre) passes by the hut, which serves as a support point for hikers on that route. The hut was built in 1896 as the Pravitalehütte by the Dresden section of the DÖAV (German and Austrian Alpine Club) and was first enlarged in 1912. After the First World War, it passed to the Treviso section of the CAI. The rifugio has been renovated several times, including in 1959 and in 2004/05, when it was also expanded with an annex. Access to the hut is typically gained from Cant de Gal (1,160 m) via trail 709 in about 3 hours, or from San Martino di Castrozza (1,466 m) via trails 702 and 715 in about 3 hours 30 minutes. Neighbouring huts and crossings include the Rifugio Rosetta 'Giovanni Pedrotti' (2,581 m) via trails 709 and 707 in 2 hours 30 minutes, the Rifugio Velo della Madonna (2,358 m) via trail 739 (Ferrata del Velo) and trail 739 A (Ferrata del Porton) in 3 hours, and the Rifugio Treviso (1,630 m) via trails 709 and 711 in 4 hours.
