Overview

Rifugio Miserin is a mountain hut (rifugio) in the Graian Alps, located at 2,588 metres above sea level beside the Miserin lake within the municipality of Champorcher in Italy's Aosta Valley. It is a seasonal hospitality and mountaineering facility, typically open from June to mid-September, when it provides 40 beds for climbers and hikers. The hut sits inside the Mont Avic Regional Park, close to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow, a small church built as early as 1630 that is now a pilgrimage site. The refuge is a stop on the Aosta Valley High Route No. 2 and serves as a base for ascents of nearby peaks such as Rosa dei Banchi, Mont Glacier, Mont Délaz and Mont Rascias, as well as for visits to the alpine lakes Ponton, Pontonnet and Miserin. Access is usually from Champorcher via a dirt road to a car park near Dondénaz, followed by an easy walk of about 1.5 hours, or via the high route from Chardonney. As a mountain hut, Rifugio Miserin functions as a small commercial hospitality brand within the network of Aosta Valley refuges, offering food, lodging and information to the mountain tourism market.

History

Rifugio Miserin is a mountain hut in the Graian Alps, situated at 2,588 metres above sea level on the shore of the Miserin lake in the municipality of Champorcher, Aosta Valley, Italy. It lies within the Mont Avic Regional Park and very close to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow, a small church built as early as 1630 that is now a pilgrimage destination. The hut is managed seasonally, open from June to mid-September, and during that period offers 40 sleeping places for mountaineers. It is located near the Aosta Valley High Route No. 2. The approach from Champorcher follows a car road towards the Mont Avic Regional Park; at the end of the driveable track, which ends as a gravel road, there is a car park. The entire easy route from the car park at Dondénaz to the Miserin hut takes about 1.5 hours. Alternatively, from the hamlet of Chardonney one can follow the Aosta Valley High Route No. 2, with a pure walking time of 4.5 hours. From the hut, the alpine lakes Ponton (2,603 m), Pontonnet (2,809 m) and Miserin (2,665 m) can be reached. The hut also serves as a base for transitions to the Sogno hut (2,526 m) over the Fenêtre de Champorcher pass (2,827 m), to the Dondena hut (2,192 m), to Plan Clavalité near Fénis over the Col de Fénis (2,831 m), and to Ronco Canavese. Several summits can be climbed from the hut, including Rosa dei Banchi (3,164 m), Bec Raty (2,382 m), Tête des Hommes (2,618 m), Mont Glacier (3,186 m), Mont Délaz (3,139 m), Mont de Dondénaz (2,543 m) and Mont Rascias (2,783 m). The hut is listed in mountaineering literature, such as Gerd Klotz's guide to the Gran Paradiso region.
