Overview

Rifugio Luigi Cibrario is a mountain hut (rifugio) in the Graian Alps of the Piedmont region, northern Italy. Situated at 2,616 metres above sea level in the municipality of Usseglio, it lies at the head of the Valle di Viù on the Conca del Sabiunin near Lago di Peraciaval. The hut is owned by the Turin section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) and operated by the CAI's Leini section. It is open during the summer months and serves as a base for hikers and climbers exploring the surrounding peaks and passes. The rifugio was initiated by Conte Luigi Cibrario, then president of the CAI Turin section, and construction began in 1880. It was inaugurated in 1890 and later renamed in his honour in 1939. The building has been expanded and modernised several times, most recently in 1998. It is a key stop on the Tour della Bessanese and offers access to summits such as Croce Rossa, Monte Lera, Punta Sulè and Punta d'Arnas, as well as connections to Rifugio Bartolomeo Gastaldi and the Refuge d'Avérole. As a commercial offering, the rifugio provides accommodation, meals and booking services, with a webcam and online reservation system available through its website. The official website is currently under maintenance, but contact telephone numbers are provided. The hut remains an active and well-known facility in the Italian Alps.

History

The Rifugio Luigi Cibrario was conceived by Conte Luigi Cibrario, who was president of the Turin section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) in the late 19th century. Construction began in 1880, and the hut was inaugurated in 1890. It was originally built to provide shelter for mountaineers exploring the Graian Alps above the Valle di Viù. In 1939, the rifugio was renamed in honour of its initiator, Conte Luigi Cibrario. Over the decades, the building has been expanded and modernised several times to improve facilities for visitors. The most recent major renovation took place in 1998. The hut remains the property of the CAI Turin section, while its day-to-day operation is entrusted to the CAI Leini section. It continues to serve as a summer base for hikers and climbers, and is a stop on the Tour della Bessanese, a long-distance alpine route.
