Overview

Rifugio Grauzaria, also known as Rifugio Creta Grauzaria (German: Grauzariahütte), is a mountain hut owned and operated by the Moggio Udinese Section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) in the Carnic Alps of northeastern Italy. It sits at an elevation of 1,250 metres in the Aupa Valley, within the municipality of Moggio Udinese in the Province of Udine, at the foot of the vertical northern walls of Creta Grauzaria and Cima di Gjai. The hut is a traditional alpine base for summer hiking and climbing, offering beds, a kitchen serving local dishes, and a family-friendly atmosphere. According to its official website, it is open daily from 1 June to 30 September, while German-language sources describe a typical season from early May to early October. It has 22 sleeping places. The hut lies on the Via Alpina long-distance trail and serves as a staging point for routes toward the Monte Sernio area, including the nearby Rifugio Monte Sernio and onward to Tolmezzo. It is also a base for the Falesia della Sfinge climbing crag. The building was planned from the mid-1950s by the CAI Moggio Udinese Section after a donation and private contributions provided the necessary funds, and it opened in 1963 thanks to the unpaid work of many section volunteers. Today it remains an active alpine refuge and a local hospitality business under the CAI umbrella.

History

The need for a base for ascents in the Sernio-Grauzaria group was already recognized in the early 20th century. After the Second World War, as many alpine pastures (alm) that had previously served as emergency shelters were abandoned, the need became more urgent. From the mid-1950s, the Moggio Udinese Section of the Club Alpino Italiano was finally able to begin planning the construction of a hut, after a donation provided the section with the necessary financial means, which were further increased by numerous private donors. In 1963, the Rifugio Creta Grauzaria was opened thanks to the unpaid work of many volunteers from the section. The hut has since served as a staging point for hikers and climbers in the Carnic Alps, located on the Via Alpina and near routes leading toward the Monte Sernio area and Tolmezzo. It remains operated by the CAI Moggio Udinese Section.
