Overview

Rifugio Gran Baita, also known as Baita CAI, Baita Omegna, or Gran Baita, is a mountain hut and restaurant located just below the summit of Monte Mottarone in Italy. It is owned by the CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) section of Omegna. The hut was inaugurated in 1946, replacing an earlier shelter opened the previous year at Alpe Omo. Its original purpose was to encourage mountaineering and ski-mountaineering ascents by the people of Omegna to Mottarone. With the development of tourism on the summit, the hut became a destination for mass tourism, accessible by car or by the rack railway. In winter, the spread of skiing made Mottarone increasingly a mass mountain. In 1970, a new platter lift was opened next to the hut, built by the Marchisio company of Turin, named Baita Omegna. This lift expanded the ski area and placed the hut directly on the slopes. In 1988, the lift was replaced by a new Leitner skilift with a slightly longer route. Since 2009, the hut has been the start and finish point of the "Mottarone Moon Ski Alp", an international night ski-mountaineering race organized by CAI Omegna. The hut is in a panoramic position, facing the Alpine chain (particularly Monte Rosa) and the underlying Lake Orta. The structure is open all year and functions as a restaurant and small hotel.

History

Rifugio Gran Baita was inaugurated in 1946, replacing a previous shelter that had opened the year before at Alpe Omo. In winter, the growing popularity of skiing transformed Mottarone into a mass mountain destination. In 1970, a new platter lift was built next to the hut by the Marchisio company of Turin, named Baita Omegna. This lift expanded the ski area and placed the hut directly on the slopes. In 1988, the platter lift was replaced by a new Leitner skilift with a slightly longer route.
