Overview
Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle (German: Kölner Hütte) is a mountain hut and inn situated at 2,337 metres above sea level on the western slope of the Rosengarten group in the South Tyrolean Dolomites, Italy. It lies within the municipality of Welschnofen (Nova Levante) and is accessible by cable car (Laurin I gondola and König Laurin II chairlift) as well as on foot from the Nigerpass or Frommeralm. The hut serves as a base for hikers and climbers exploring the surrounding peaks, including the Rosengartenspitze, and is a stop on the Santnerpass via ferrata. It offers rooms and dormitory beds, traditional meals, and hosts events such as the annual Sacred Heart fires dinner. The building is owned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano – South Tyrol and operated by private tenants. Its history dates back to 1899, when it was built by the Rheinland section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club; after World War I it was expropriated by the Italian state and transferred to the Verona section of the Club Alpino Italiano, which renamed it in memory of its fallen president Aleardo Fronza. A fire in 1966 led to a rebuild completed in 1969. Since 1999 it has been part of a group of 24 expropriated huts owned by the province, and since 2015 a parity commission including the AVS and CAI assists in its administration. Today it continues to welcome guests under the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Dolomites.
History
The Kölner Hütte was built in 1899 by the Rheinland section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club (DuOeAV). It was initially known as the Rosengartenhütte or Kölner Haus. After World War I, the hut was expropriated by the Italian state and in 1924 handed over to the Verona section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), which renamed it in memory of its fallen president Aleardo Fronza. A fire in 1966 destroyed the building, and a new structure was completed in 1969. In 1999, together with 24 other expropriated huts, it became the property of the Autonomous Province of Bozen – South Tyrol. The concession for its management by the CAI expired at the end of 2010. Since 2015, the province has been assisted in administering the hut (leasing to tenants, monitoring management, renovation measures) by a parity commission that includes representatives of the public sector, the AVS (Alpenverein Südtirol), and the CAI. The hut continues to operate as a mountain inn and base for outdoor activities in the Rosengarten group.
