Overview

Rifugio Eugenio Margaroli is an alpine hut (rifugio alpino) in the Italian Alps, situated at 2,194 metres above sea level on the shores of Lago Vannino in the alpe of the same name, within the comune of Formazza in the Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Piedmont. It is owned and operated by the Domodossola section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), Italy's national alpine club. The hut was built from scratch by volunteers of the CAI Domodossola section over three years of work and was inaugurated on 7 September 1980. It is dedicated to Eugenio Margaroli, an alpine guide from Domodossola who died in a work accident in Peru in 1971. The structure is a two-storey masonry building with an attic. The ground floor houses the dining room, while the upper floor contains the sleeping quarters, divided between rooms with bunk beds and larger dormitories with a common wooden platform, for a total of 46 beds. The hut has hot water, electrical and heating systems, and a free broadband internet connection for guests. It opens in two periods: a spring season from 1 March to 30 April and a summer season from 15 June to 30 September. The rifugio is reached on foot via an agro-silvo-pastoral track that leads from the village of Canza up to Lago Vannino, following the valley floor, or by taking the Sagersboden chairlift at Valdo to shorten the hike and save about 400 metres of elevation gain. The same route can be followed in winter with snowshoes or skis. It serves as a base for ascents of Punta d'Arbola (3,235 m), Monte Giove (3,009 m), Cima Cust (3,045 m), Clogstafel (2,967 m), Punta del Forno (2,967 m), Corni di Nefelgiù (2,651 m) and Punta del Vannino (2,635 m), and for traverses to Rifugio Miryam, Rifugio Castiglioni and Città di Sesto, Rifugio Città di Busto, Rifugio Cesare Mores and Somma Lombardo, and Rifugio Claudio e Bruno and Rifugio 3A.
