Overview

The Rifugio Ernesto Tazzetti is a mountain hut (rifugio) in the Graian Alps of Piedmont, northern Italy, situated at 2,642 metres above sea level in the Valle di Viù, within the municipality of Usseglio in the Metropolitan City of Turin. It stands in the Fons 'd Rumur basin, above the Lago di Malciaussia, and is owned by the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), Italy's national alpine association. Since 1980 it has been managed by the CAI's Chieri section, whose volunteer members run the hut during the summer season, typically from June to September. The hut was built in 1913 by the Turin section of the CAI under the name Rifugio Fons 'd Rumur al Rocciamelone. In 1933 it was renamed in memory of Ernesto Tazzetti, a physician and alpinist who died in a climbing accident in 1927. The building has been enlarged and modernised several times, most recently in 1998. It offers 33 beds and provides food and overnight accommodation to hikers, climbers and families. It is a key base for ascents of the Rocciamelone (3,538 m) from the north and east, and also serves as a high-altitude reference point for mountain rescue. Access on foot takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from the Lago di Malciaussia. The hut is also a stage on longer traverses, connecting to the Rifugio Luigi Cibrario via the Col Sulé, to the Rifugio Cà d'Asti over the Rocciamelone summit, and to the Refuge d'Avérole via the Colle dell'Autaret. As of the official website, the Rifugio Tazzetti is closed and is scheduled to reopen in June 2027; supplies reach the hut by helicopter or on the backs of volunteers.
