Overview

Rifugio Dodici Apostoli, also known as Rifugio XII Apostoli or Rifugio Dodici Apostoli "F.lli Garbari", is a mountain hut owned by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT) in the Brenta group of the Dolomites, in Trentino, Italy. It stands at 2,487 metres above sea level on the western side of the Brenta range, at the edge of the Conca di Pratofiorito near the Pratofiorito and Agola snowfields, above the Val di Nardis. The hut is named after the nearby Passo XII Apostoli and the small rock formation there whose twelve pinnacles resemble figures in prayer. The original cubic building was constructed by SAT in 1908 with funding from Carlo and Giuseppe Garbari, wealthy Trentino merchants, amateur alpinists and photographers, to whom the hut is dedicated. It was first expanded in 1956 and completely renovated between 1998 and 1999. The hut typically opens from mid-June to mid-September and offers 38 beds plus a winter room with 6 beds. A memorial chapel dedicated to mountaineers who died in the mountains was blasted into the north wall of the Cima dei XII Apostoli above the hut in 1952. The rifugio is a classic base for the Sentiero delle Bocchette via ferrata routes and for rock climbing on bolted and fixed routes in the Brenta. It is reached on foot from Val d'Algone, Doss del Sabion and Pra Rodont, and is linked to neighbouring huts including Rifugio Pedrotti, Rifugio Agostini and Rifugio Brentei. The current manager is Aldo Turri, an alpine guide, and the hut offers guided excursions and via ferrata packages.

History

Rifugio Dodici Apostoli was built by the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT) and inaugurated in 1908 after about a year of construction. It was financed by Carlo and Giuseppe Garbari, two wealthy merchants from Trento who were also amateur alpinists and photographers; the hut's full name, Rifugio Dodici Apostoli "F.lli Garbari", honours them. The construction pre-empted a plan by the Berlin section of the DuOeAV, which after building the Tuckettpasshütte intended to build another hut in the Brenta group at this location. The original building was a modest cube-shaped structure. It was first expanded in 1956. In 1952, a memorial chapel for mountaineering victims, the Zwölf-Apostel-Kapelle, was created by blasting into the north wall of the Cima dei XII Apostoli above the hut. The hut was completely renovated between 1998 and 1999 (the official website states 1997–1998). The hut is named after the Passo XII Apostoli and the striking small rock formation nearby, whose twelve pinnacles resemble praying figures. It lies at 2,487 m s.l.m. at the outer edge of the Conca di Pratofiorito, at the head of the Val di Nardis, on the western side of the southern Brenta group facing Val Rendena. It typically opens from mid-June to mid-September and has 38 beds plus a winter room with 6 beds. It is a base for the Sentiero delle Bocchette and for rock climbing, and is linked to Rifugio Pedrotti, Rifugio Agostini and Rifugio Brentei. The current manager is Aldo Turri, an alpine guide.
