Overview

The Rifugio Città di Chivasso is a mountain hut (rifugio) in the Aosta Valley in the Graian Alps, situated at an elevation of 2,604 metres above sea level on the Colle del Nivolet pass within the municipality of Valsavarenche. The building was constructed by the military in 1938 and was taken over in 1950 by the Chivasso section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), which converted it into a mountain hut. Since 2010 the hut has belonged to the municipality of Valsavarenche. It is managed from late March to mid-May and from late June to mid-September, and offers 34 sleeping places. The Colle del Nivolet pass separates the Valle dell'Orco, on the Piedmont side, from the Valsavarenche valley, a southern side valley of the Aosta Valley. The hut lies within the Gran Paradiso National Park, and the Rifugio Savoia is only 1 km away. The ascent to the hut begins at the hamlet of Pont (1,960 m); the entire, difficulty-free route from the large car park at Pont to the Rifugio Città di Chivasso takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. Alternatively, the hut can be reached by car from Ceresole Reale in Piedmont. From the hut, a wealth of small glacial lakes can be reached, such as Lago Rosset and the Laghi Trebecchi. Transitions are possible to the Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,735 m) via the Col di Punta Fourà (3,124 m), to the Rifugio Gian Federico Benevolo (2,285 m) via the Col della Nivoletta (3,130 m) or the Col Rosset (3,023 m), to Rhêmes-Notre-Dame via the Col Rosset, and to Rhêmes-Notre-Dame via the Col del Leynir (3,084 m). Summit tours from the hut include Gran Vaudala (3,272 m), Punta Basei (3,338 m), Punta di Galisia (3,346 m), Punta Fourà (3,411 m), and Mont Taou Blanc (3,438 m).

History
